JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Head Softball Coach, the Assistant Softball Coach supports all aspects of the softball program. This position emphasizes hitting instruction and approach, defensive position coaching, and player development. The Assistant Coach plays a key role in developing hitters, managing a designated defensive position group, and serving as the program’s lead recruiter.
In addition, the Assistant Softball Coach will assist with Athletic Department responsibilities, including the maintenance and upkeep of college softball facilities and fields. This position also supports game management operations for other college athletic programs.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Softball Assistant Coach (Position Player/Recruiting) (70%)
- Assist in planning, organizing, and conducting team practices, workouts, and individual skill development sessions.
- Support in-game coaching responsibilities during practices and competitive events, including instruction, positioning, and strategic adjustments.
- Assist in the development and implementation of training programs designed to promote player growth, discipline, skill advancement, and a positive team culture.
- Monitor student-athlete behavior and promote sportsmanship, accountability, academic responsibility, and leadership both on and off the field.
- Maintain full participation and availability for all team practices, games, travel, and program-related functions as required.
- Evaluate student-athlete performance using video review, statistical data, and live observation to support coaching decisions and development plans.
- Assist with recruiting efforts, including coordination of campus visits, communication with prospective student-athletes, and follow-up activities.
- Assist with fundraising initiatives and related program support activities.
- Assist with softball facility maintenance and upkeep, including general field maintenance, mowing, and ensuring a safe and functional playing environment.
Recruiting
- Identify, evaluate, and recruit prospective student-athletes, including high school and transfer players who meet program athletic and academic standards.
- Communicate regularly with high school, travel ball, and club coaches to gather information and build recruiting relationships.
- Assist with organizing and supporting recruiting activities, including campus visits, camps, showcases, and tours.
Athletic Department Assistant (25%)
- Assist the Director of Athletics & Student Life with game management for home athletic events when not in season.
- Monitor student-athlete academic progress, attendance, and eligibility requirements.
- Promote academic success and support student-athlete personal development.
- Coordinate study hall, tutoring, and other retention support services as needed.
Non-Essential Functions (5%)
- May be required to achieve additional skill, knowledge, or credentialing levels.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EQUIPMENT
Work activities routinely involve the use of standard office equipment, including computers, printers, copiers, scanners, telephones, and other related devices. Employees are expected to perform tasks such as data entry, document preparation, email communication, and report generation using these tools. In addition, this position requires the operation, maintenance, and proper handling of athletic and field equipment, including pitching machines, batting cages, field maintenance equipment, mowers, utility vehicles, and other softball-related training and game-day equipment. The position may also require the operation of a college or rental van using a valid standard driver’s license for team travel, recruiting activities, and other program-related transportation needs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong interpersonal relationships with student-athletes, coaches, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members while fostering a positive and professional team culture.
- Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills with the ability to effectively prioritize multiple responsibilities, meet deadlines, and manage recruiting, travel, practice, and game schedules in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of appropriate procedures and protocols to follow in emergency situations, including student-athlete injuries, facility emergencies, weather-related events, and other incidents requiring immediate response and communication.
- Experience utilizing data analytics, video analysis platforms, and performance technology to evaluate and enhance student-athlete performance, including systems such as Rapsodo, Synergy, Hudl, or similar softball and athletic performance software.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace applications, including the ability to create reports, manage recruiting databases, organize schedules, maintain records, and communicate effectively through digital platforms.
- Proven success in identifying, recruiting, and developing student-athletes who positively contribute to team performance, academic achievement, and overall program success both on and off the field.
JOB STANDARDS/QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in any combination of:
- Collegiate playing experience
- Graduate assistant or volunteer coaching experience
- Assistant coaching experience at the collegiate level
- Head coaching experience at the high school level
- Valid driver’s license.
JOB LOCATION
This on-site position is based at the main campus of Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, Tennessee. Regular travel to athletic events, recruiting activities, conferences, and other program-related functions at other institutions is expected. Travel may include day, evening, overnight, and weekend trips throughout the region and state. The position may require transporting student-athletes and staff using college or rental vehicles and attending events in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments and weather conditions. Flexibility in scheduling is essential, as work hours frequently include nights, weekends, holidays, and extended travel periods during the athletic season.
