Job Summary

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) instructor.

Job Duties

  • Develop course of study and conduct training program in specialty area
  • Confer with administration to gain knowledge and better understand changes in policies, procedures, and technologies 
  • Formulate teaching outline and determine instructional methods utilizing knowledge of specific training needs and effectiveness of such methods as individualized and group instruction, lecture, demonstration, and conference 
  • Select or develop teaching aids, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids, and reference materials 
  • Test trainees to measure progress and evaluate effectiveness of instruction 
  • Select or develop specifications for machines, equipment, and tools 
  • Maintain good physical conditions in classroom and/or shop 
  • Maintain student records and reports 
  • Responsible for student placement and assist with student follow-up 
  • Cooperate with outside agencies to find placement for students
  • Work with program advisory committee
  • Conduct visits to business and industry
  • Establish and maintain good public relations with college’s general public
  • Participate in recruitment of students
  • Instruct students in safety and practice good safety habits
  • Supervise students that are participating in cooperative education
  • Annually participate in professional development and growth
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Three years current work experience in all phases of residential, commercial, and industrial HVAC/R systems to include installation and service
  • EPA Universal Certification
  • Willingness to acquire new skills and remain current in the field is also required
  • Be willing to learn and use individualized instructional techniques
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal working relationship with students, faculty, staff, and general public
  • Must have excellent professional ethics

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited HVAC/R technical program
  • Earned associate's degree from an accredited institution
  • Knowledge of Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) policies and procedures
  • Skill in managing deadlines and working in a team-oriented environment
  • NATE/HVAC Excellence Certification a plus
  • Willingness to continue education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The HVAC/R program is a program that prepares students to work in a variety of jobs in the field of air conditioning and refrigeration. Students are prepared to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain residential and commercial refrigeration; air conditioning; heat pumps; humidifiers; and electrical and gas heating. Students also learn the fundamentals of electricity, electric motors, and controls. Graduates of the program will be able to install and braze refrigeration tubing, diagnose electrical problems; install duct systems; repair light commercial equipment; recover air conditioning and refrigeration refrigerants; locate and repair leaks.

Physical Demands / Working Conditions

  • Use of computer
  • Normal standing, sitting, and walking
  • Must be physically able to lift up to 50 lb., stoop, stand and work, with or without accommodation, to demonstrate and perform all work-based projects.
  • Operating a motor vehicle to travel within the college service area and in other areas as needed.

Salary: Commensurate with education, experience and according to salary guidelines established by the Tennessee Board of Regents. An Associate Instructor grade annual salary range is minimum $56,263 to midpoint $67,517.
