About the Department:

The Graduate Division, part of the Office of the Provost under Academic Affairs, elevates Mason graduate education by augmenting the work of the academic units, increasing the impact of graduate students and programs, fostering a collaborative culture of academic excellence, and contributing to the research productivity and the workforce development appropriate to an R1 institution.

About the Position:

This Assistant Provost for Graduate Student Affairs will provide leadership, strategic direction, and advocacy in all matters related to graduate student affairs, especially graduate faculty and staff support for enhancing student academic outcomes, career readiness, and the overall graduate student experience. Additional assignment is up to a three-year period commitment.

Responsibilities:

  • Guide the Graduate Division in responding to all graduate education-related goals of the university’s strategic plan by leading and supporting graduate student affairs initiatives;
  • Assist the Senior Associate Provost for Graduate Education in developing strategic direction for graduate student affairs in collaboration with other university stakeholders;
  • Serve as a liaison to the Associate Deans of Student Affairs and Associate Deans of Research;
  • Strategically engage and communicate with graduate faculty and staff about initiatives to enhance the overall graduate student success and experience;
  • Lead the development of strategic initiatives and planning for the Graduate Division, including best practices to improve graduate student outcomes - such as retention and degree completion rates, research, scholarship, and creative activity achievements, and career readiness competencies;
  • In partnership with OIEP, oversee the development, implementation, and management of graduate student data dashboards;
  • Promote collaboration and facilitate interdisciplinary programming and events for graduate faculty, staff, and students; and
  • Increase recognition of the Graduate Division’s student affairs offerings to the academic units and the graduate community at large.

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in a related field;
  • Required rank of Term or Tenured Associate Professor or (Full) Professor;
  • Excellent written and oral communication; and
  • Expert in collaboration and relationship building.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Academic leadership experience as a graduate program director, chair, or associate/assistant dean, or related position; and
  • Supervision experience.
