About the Department:
Student Health Services (SHS) provides health care services at George Mason University. SHS provides primary care services and health promotion to eligible students at Mason, including, but not limited to, initial and follow up assessment, history taking, physical exam of patients, utilization of differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations and referrals as indicated, and basic emergency treatment and stabilization. SHS staff provide services to faculty, staff, and visitors on an as needed basis. SHS operates its main clinic at the Fairfax campus, and smaller clinics at the Mason Square (Arlington) and SciTech (Manassas) campuses.

About the Position:
The Immunization Compliance Medical Assistant supports the efforts of the Student Health Services Immunization Section in ensuring all students are compliant with Commonwealth of Virginia vaccination requirements for higher education. The Immunization Compliance Medical Assistant utilizes clinical, administrative, and laboratory skills in performing diagnostic tests, administering vaccinations, performing data entry, and carrying out other duties as requested by the Clinical Immunization Compliance Manager and/or Associate Nursing Director.

Responsibilities:
Administrative:
- Handles student inquires and complaints related to the immunization process, in person and/or by phone;
- Reviews immunization records and/or exemptions of incoming students;
- Completes data entry of student records and processing of uploaded documents;
- Follows existing SHS processes for TB clearances, chest x-rays, and student vaccination appointment scheduling;
- Determines which students are non-compliant, and notifies them of their status;
- Provides excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating a high degree of diplomacy, courtesy, and a high level of confidentiality when working with all levels of staff and the public;
- Provides follow-through and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and accurately handle multiple priorities;
- Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment;
- Proficient with basic PC skills, including Microsoft Office suite;
- Accurately utilizes the EHR for documentation; and
- Participates in orientation/admission events to educate students on immunization requirements.
Clinical:
Laboratory/Phlebotomy Techniques and Safety Practices:
- Safely operate and maintain all laboratory equipment;
- Proficiency in phlebotomy and universal safety precautions;
- Accuracy in documentation of laboratory test results;
- Properly store and handle hazardous materials, cleaning agents and potentially infectious materials; and
- Upon completion of lab orientation, maintains competency.
Administers Immunizations:
- Safely and accurately administers immunizations;
- Participates in annual safe injection practice training and maintains knowledge through ongoing CDC training;
- Follows CDC and WHO guidelines for vaccine recommendations and educates patients regarding required and administered vaccines; and
- Participates in university-wide flu and vaccine clinics.

Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED;
- Experience obtained in 1 year as a Medical Assistant;
- BLS Provider Certification;
- Knowledge of unique needs of college students;
- Knowledge of adolescent and adult immunization requirements; and
- Effective communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree preferred;
- Medical Assistant Certification;
- Experience obtained in 1 year as a Medical Assistant in an out-patient setting; and
- Experience working with college age students.
