About the Department:

The College of Visual and Performing Arts at George Mason University is dedicated to making the arts an inescapable presence in the lives of all George Mason students and Northern Virginia residents.

About the Position:

The College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks qualified candidates for a Scene Shop Lead Carpenter to start in August of 2025 or soon after.

Responsibilities:

  • Candidate will work extensively with students;
  • Provides scenic construction and support to the various departments of the College of Visual and Performing Arts;
  • Assists students in the execution of curriculum mandated duties and projects; 
  • Assists the scene shop staff in maintaining the CVPA Scene Shop as a safe and efficient working environment;
  • Position entails:
    • Heavy lifting;
    • Working at heights; and
    • Exposure to noises generated by power tools.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidate should possess skills and talents to operate hand, pneumatic, welding and power tools;
  • The ability to interpret scenic design drawings and to determine materials and processes necessary to carry out these designs;
  • Theatre experience including but not limited to carpentry and props; and
  • People skills and time management are vital and equipment maintenance abilities are preferred.

Night and weekend hours will occasionally be required. This is a non-student wage position (August to early May, exact dates flexible). Starting pay rate is $25/hr. (negotiable).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theater preferred; and
  • Demonstrated ability working with a diverse population of artists, students, faculty, staff, and community members.
