VP Area: Enrollment Management & Student Success

Department: Student Life

Published Salary Range: $13.00

Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Seamore Shuttle Driver is a student employee position within the Housing and Residential Life department at Lake Superior State University. Drivers are responsible for operating the Seamore Shuttle, a free transportation service available to currently enrolled LSSU students. The shuttle provides reliable transportation to key locations within the city limits of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, including grocery stores, pharmacies, shopping centers, and other essential service areas.

This position is critical to supporting student access to basic needs, especially for those without personal transportation. Drivers are expected to uphold the highest standards of safety, reliability, and customer service while ensuring that students arrive at their destinations on time and feel welcomed during their ride.

Shuttle Drivers must operate the university vehicle responsibly and independently, following all LSSU vehicle policies, Michigan traffic laws, and established shuttle schedules or routing procedures. Drivers are expected to conduct daily pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections, maintain accurate records (such as mileage and usage logs), and report any issues or delays promptly to the Housing and Residential Life Office.

In addition to driving duties, Seamore Shuttle Drivers serve as representatives of LSSU, often being one of the few staff students interact with outside of the classroom. As such, professionalism, friendliness, and a student-centered attitude are essential. Drivers should be comfortable interacting with students from a wide range of backgrounds and be prepared to respond calmly and appropriately to minor conflicts, delays, or concerns during their shifts.

This role offers a valuable opportunity for LSSU students to build professional skills in time management, communication, problem-solving, and independent decision-making, all while contributing directly to student success and well-being.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently enrolled LSSU student in good academic standing
  • Must be at least 20 years old
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Must successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and complete university driver training
  • Must be dependable, punctual, and able to work independently
  • Comfortable driving in urban settings and winter conditions
