Position Summary

Carol Grotnes Belk Library at Elon University seeks a creative, collaborative individual with a genuine enthusiasm for teaching to fill the position of First-Year Experience Librarian. The person in this role will join our growing Teaching and Learning team as we develop foundational literacies and skills that prepare students to succeed in their majors, undergraduate research, and lifelong learning.

The First-Year Experience Librarian will also lead the library's engagement with campus programs that help students thrive, with a focus on transfer, first-generation, and historically underrepresented students. The FYE Librarian will serve as liaison to the Department of English and will work with a collaborative team of librarians that supports the teaching, outreach, and assessment goals of the library. Ideal candidates will demonstrate a commitment to Elon's values of Inclusive Excellence and help foster a welcoming climate within Belk Library and the Elon University community. Belk Library is evolving its teaching, outreach, and learning work, and this position offers a meaningful opportunity to build on the library's strong foundation and help shape its future direction.

This is a 12-month, on-site, non-tenured Staff with Faculty Rank position reporting to the Coordinator of Teaching and Learning.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

  • A master's degree from an ALA-accredited program in library or information science.
  • Demonstrated willingness to cultivate expertise in providing creative and innovative learning experiences in a university library.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully both collaboratively and independently.
  • Commitment to professional development in librarianship, professional activity, and service.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Job Duties

  • Coordinates library teaching and outreach to first-year students by working with a team that creates, delivers, and assesses information literacy initiatives supporting Elon's Core Curriculum and First-Year Foundations.
  • Collaborates with the library's new Teaching and Learning team and other library instructors to build the library curriculum and explore new instructional models and learning pathways.
  • Collaborates with campus partners to support and develop new engagement initiatives, including skill-building and community-building programming, with a focus on first-year, transfer, and first-generation students. Coordinates the library's Personal Librarian program.
  • Serves as liaison to the Department of English, providing research support and developing collections for students majoring in English and Professional Writing and Rhetoric and for the faculty scholars who teach them. Serves as liaison to the Center for Access and Success, the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity Education, and the Division of Student Life.
  • Serves as a member of a cross-functional library team, including shared responsibilities in reference and research support, teaching, assessment, collection management, and community engagement.
  • Participates in professional development, regional, statewide, and national professional associations, and University governance activities as appropriate for Staff with Faculty Rank. Engages in the broader life of the Elon University community through appropriate committee work, support of student and faculty events, and service activities.
