Purpose of Position
The Assistant Dean will provide oversight for Phase 2/3 of the medical program curriculum. They must be committed to the concept of excellence in all endeavors of the SMHS, be they educational, research, and/or service, with an emphasis on the ongoing development and continuous improvement of the medical program curriculum. Will travel to visit clinical sites within North Dakota and Northwest Minnesota.
This is a 1.0 FTE, twelve (12) month, non-tenure track, special appointment with University of North Dakota (UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) within Education Resources. The 1.0 FTE will be 0.75 assistant dean duties and 0.25 clinical time. An academic home will be determined based on the candidate’s credentials.
Duties & Responsibilities
The position of Assistant Dean for Phase 2/3 will have several specific responsibilities, which include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Curriculum
- Serve an active role in development of and contribution to curricular topics for Phase 2 and 3 and longitudinal curricula across all phases
- Oversight of establishment of additional clinical preceptor sites for phase 2/3
- Assume a coordination role in required courses in P2/P3
- Learning management system (i.e., Leo) administration related to P2/P3
- Student Interaction
- Lead student transitions into and between Phase 2 and 3
- Lead the student education initiatives related to the residency interview, application and match process including offering mock interviews
- Play an active role in efforts to gather and respond to student feedback related to phase 2/3, including the Annual Student Engagement Survey (ASES)
- Act as an ad hoc student advisor for students with Phase 2 and Phase 3 questions
- Compliance Monitoring and Administrative Tasks
- Monitor compliance for and address deficiencies in items in Phase 2/3 important for LCME accreditation
- Complete student requirements in VSLO (attestations, letters of good standing)
- Report to curriculum committees yearly on Phase 2 and 3 and the acting internship (AI)program
- Oversight and advising of the MD Program affiliation agreement process
- Networking and Team Work
- Serve as a liaison between campus offices, the Office of Student Affairs, clinical departments and health systems in concert with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions, campus deans and department chairs
Required Competencies
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Strong ability to utilize or learn relevant technology
Minimum Requirements
- MD or DO Degree
- Board Certified
- Licensed to practice in ND or eligible for ND licensure
- At least three years of medical education experience
- Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

- 10 years of experience in medical education
- Experience with regional campus, community-based medical school
- Highly developed communication and organizational skills
