Purpose of Position

The EERC is looking for a graduate student to work 20 hours/week during spring 2026. The successful candidate will work with multidisciplinary teams to design and execute experimental plans, analyze the data, and prepare technical reports.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct literature reviews.
  • Execute experiments to synthesize electrode/catalyst powder or prepare electrochemical cells, characterize powder properties, and analyze material structure.
  • Work on a multidisciplinary team to implement a fundamental materials principles and research methodology to solid oxide electrolysis cell development.
  • Demonstrate strong laboratory skills, analytical, interpersonal, and communication aptitudes.
  • Summarize experimental data, prepare charts, figures, and presentations, and provide periodic progress reports to the engineers or supervisor.

Minimum Requirements

  • Graduate student in material science, chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical engineering, or related field.
  • Proven interest in scientific research, engineering design and optimization, and hands-on lab work.
  • Knowledge in fundamental electrochemistry
  • Experience with presenting technical information in a professional environment, such as through a poster or conference presentation.
  • Applicants may be required to provide a writing sample.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience in electrochemical cell design, set-up, and testing.
  • Understand fuel cell and electrolysis cell working principles.
  • Knowledge in electrocatalytic reaction and catalyst materials.
  • Understand materials science principles and basic materials processing technique.
  • Familiar with ceramic powder characterization and materials examination technique and equipment. e.g., SEM, XRD, NMR, BET, etc.
  • Able to execute experiments independently.
  • Experience compiling and presenting scientific data.
  • Experience in combining working on technical tasks and studying federal and/or state data retention and storage policies for scientific research.
  • Experience in technical writing, such as an author or coauthor on a published peer-reviewed article.
