Classification Summary:
Under general supervision, independently performs a wide range of routine to complex medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. May specialize in areas such as hematology, blood bank, serology, immunohematology, bacteriology, histology, or chemistry.
Classification Standard Duties:
Conducts chemical analyses of body fluids such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal and/or abnormal components. Validates, calculates, and tabulates results of tests performed, posts findings to log books and quality control records, and makes reports of observations. Assists medical staff in the interpretation of test results and with the selection of additional tests as appropriate; serves as an independent resource to faculty, staff, and patients regarding questions and concerns pertaining clinical testing protocol, procedures, and results. Performs quality control to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents, and procedures. Establishes and implements procedures to evaluate laboratory test methodologies for accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and normal values. Researches and investigates problems with clinical laboratory procedures and makes or recommends modifications and corrections as appropriate. Orients, mentors, and teaches clinical laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques to new staff, students, and/or residents as appropriate. May lead, guide, and train staff/student employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work; may participate in the recruitment of volunteers, as appropriate to the area of operation. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency
Required Education:Bachelor's degree in a related field.; Required Experience:None.; Equivalency:None; Required Certification/License: ASCP certified or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE:Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements. Knowledge of laboratory and experimental protocols and procedures. Knowledge of specimen collection procedures. Knowledge of sterile procedures.; SKILLS:Records maintenance skills. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.; ABILITIES:Ability to perform complex, advanced clinical procedures and to effect appropriate modifications to existing procedures. Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards. Ability to perform a range of clinical laboratory tests and chemical analyses on biological samples. Ability to analyze, verify and manipulate clinical and/or laboratory data. Ability to provide technical guidance, leadership, and instruction to students and lower-level professional staff within area of expertise. Ability to independently assess clinical test results and recommend appropriate additional tests and procedures to medical staff. Ability to identify and evaluate clinical testing problems and to effect corrective procedures and modifications.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Environment: Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
Physical Effort: Light physical effort. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
Lifting Requirements: Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
Risk: Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
