Summary:  The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry invites applications for the position of Mgr., Scientific Instrumentations, responsible for scientific instruments, maintenance, operation and training.

Classification Summary:
Under limited supervision, plans, and coordinates routine instructional functions for on-line courses, classroom settings or laboratory settings. Tutors teaches, maintains supplies, manages labs. Supervises employees and students. May need to troubleshoot computer hardware and software.May conduct or schedule preventative maintenance and repair of all equipment and tools. Responsible for maintaining inventories of equipment, tools, chemicals and supplies, with procurement authority.

Classification Standard Duties:
Plans and coordinates the day-to-day activities of the laboratory, including budgeting, program management, staffing, training and supervision, and scheduling. Develops quality standards and programs; monitors and maintains quality of laboratory operations and performance of laboratory staff in compliance with accreditation standards, safety and environmental regulations, and other applicable requirements. Assist faculty in the individualized instruction of students in the labs; assure student safety; may instruct classes; Perform/schedule preventative maintenance/repair of equipment within program of study; Assure all equipment is working prior to use; Train/supervise student employees in their job responsibilities and how to safely conduct themselves in the laboratory; May complete set up of chemical, microbiological/maintenance labs to include reagent and media preparation with all associated QA/QC; Inventory equipment/chemicals and supplies; Order inventory, chemicals, equipment, media and supplies; Maintain Material Safety Data Sheets as needed/required. Demonstrate to students processes/skills with material being taught in classroom; Direct students on scheduled pathways towards a certificate or degree; Grade student assignments, quizzes, and exams as required; Maintain database of student's grades; Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of the principles and procedures of research. Knowledge of laboratory operations and/or procedures. Knowledge of chemical, hazardous waste, industrial hygiene, and/or environmental health standards. Knowledge of faculty and/or staff hiring procedures.; SKILLS:Employee development and performance management skills. Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.; ABILITIES:Ability to supervise, advise, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise. Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures. Job Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for most scientific instruments in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. As such, is responsible for their maintenance and repair, co- management of the Maintenance and Repairs budget. The Scientific Instrument Specialist supports instrument use for research and teaching laboratories, organizes and conducts training sessions on instruments, oversees instrument installation and setup, upgrades instruments' software and hardware, troubleshoots and maintains most scientific instruments. This position provides fundamental support of instructional and research activities in the Department; Gives highest priority to timely, responsive maintenance and repair of department instrumentation; Provides expertise, as necessary, on the repair and maintenance questions for shared instrumentation and specialized equipment; Upgrades software and hardware as needed for department instruments; Organizes and conducts training sessions on instrumentation, methods and techniques for instructors and researchers (faculty and students); Acquires and/or writes and produces, maintains, and disseminates quality instrument training videos; Provides technical support for faculty on instrument matters relating to teaching and research including limited method development; Oversees instrument installation and setup; Co-manages the department repairs and maintenance budget to support the cost of department instrumentation upkeep; Communicates with staff/faculty point persons in support of instrumentation housed in the department; Organizes shared usage of all department instruments; Works with department chair, faculty, laboratory technicians and laboratory coordinators in long-range planning for instrument needs and acquisition, coordinating installation of new instruments; Participates in the departmental capital equipment request annual process Keeps abreast of trends, developments, best practices, and technologies in the field of scientific instruments; Maintaining an accurate inventory of current instrumentation and maintenance records. Performs other related duties as assigned.
