Summary:  The Cooperative Extension Service department invites you to apply for an Extension 4-H Agent. CES provides the people of New Mexico with practical, research-based knowledge and programs to improve their quality of life.

Classification Summary:
County Extension Agents provide New Mexico's citizenry and communities with effective leadership and collaboration to foster economic, educational, and community development.

Classification Standard Duties:
The 4H agent provides leadership and guidance to Extension educational programs for adults and youth related to 4-H youth development, volunteerism, school enrichment, and community engagement throughout the county.

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency
Master's degree (in hand by hire date) required. At least one degree must be in Agriculture or related field. Or may be under-filled as an Extension Associate I. Bachelor's degree in Agriculture or related field with a cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher required. Must complete a master's degree within 5 years of hire date to continue employment. Promotion to assistant professor rank will be based on performance and Dean's approval.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
-Ability to relate effectively to people of all ages, income, educational levels and ethnic background and develop informal educational programs to meet their needs.
-Must have the ability to communicate orally and in writing and to teach effectively required.
-Ability to implement educational learning experiences for both youth and adults in furtherance of the mission of Extension required.
-Ability to provide leadership role in management of volunteer organization, including recruitment, training, and support of volunteers.
-Ability to work odd hours and weekends as necessary.
-Ability to travel within county, state, and nationally to Extension and all 4-H related functions as necessary, including occasional transporting and chaperoning of youth.
-Successful candidate must have basic computer skills.
-Successful candidate must be able to drive and serve as youth chaperon at state 4-H events.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
This position is for Sierra County located in Truth or Consequences, NM.

Successful candidate will :
- Provide leadership and guidance to Extension educational programs for adults volunteers and youth including 4-H and youth, special interest groups, adult and youth leaders and the public throughout the county as the job requires.
-Collaborate with youth-serving community organizations and agencies to help further
Extension 4-H/Youth Development programs.
- Support annual County Fair efforts.
- Recruit. train and support volunteer adult and youth leaders.
- Team with other Extension Agents in the county and district and with State Specialists. District Department Head and Administrators in planning and implementing total Extension programs.
- Maintain a favorable public image and gain acceptance for self, Extension and New Mexico State University among the county citizens.
- Administratively responsible to the County Program Director and through him/her to the
Southern District Department Head.
- Provide timely reports as required.
- Promote CES programs within the state to meet the LEADS 2025 goals, prioritizing the program expansion to non-traditional demographics.
- Foster collaborations and participate in activities and on research teams that support the work of the Center of Excellence in Food and Sustainable Agriculture (CESFAS)

Special Requirements of the Position
Must live in county where employed and willing to work odd hours as needed. Personal auto required; reimbursed at IRS rates per mile. Valid driver's license required.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Environment: Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements: i.e. extreme temp, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, other potentially dangerous materials/situations that require safety precaution/protective equip

Physical Effort: Considerable physical activity. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job.

Lifting Requirements: Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds.

Risk: Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
