Summary:  The Department of Agricultural and Extension Education (AXED) is seeking a 12-month, non-tenure track, Visiting Assistant Professor to support our online graduate program.

The Department of Agricultural & Extension Education prepares students for diverse careers in agricultural education, Extension, and agricultural communications.

Classification Standard Duties:
The Department of Agricultural and Extension Education (AXED) in the College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences (ACES) at New Mexico State University (NMSU) is seeking a 12-month, non-tenure track, Visiting Assistant Professor. Applicants should have a background in the social sciences and teaching expertise that can support our online graduate program with focus areas in agricultural education, communications, leadership, and Extension.

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency
An earned doctoral degree in the social sciences with teaching experience that can support AXED’s online Master of Arts degree with emphasis areas in agricultural education, communications, leadership, and Extension. ABD candidates will be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The ideal candidate would have expertise in online instruction and the andragogical acumen needed to engage non-traditional adult learners who are often place-bound in underserved, rural communities, e.g., predominantly Hispanic, Native American, and of low socioeconomic status.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
The position will have a 100% teaching appointment.
• Teaching up to 10 graduate-level course sections (4-4-2 teaching load) per academic year in the selected individual’s area of expertise while maintaining an online learning environment that encourages student engagement, innovation, and critical thinking.
• Collaborating with industry professionals and underserved populations (e.g., Hispanic, Native American, low socioeconomic status, and rural populations) to create innovative course content.
• Developing and obtaining approval to teach courses that meet departmental, college, and university requirements.
• Serving as graduate students’ academic advisor and assessing their progress to ensure timely degree completion.
• Advising and serving on graduate committees to promote student success as they complete capstone projects, i.e., a master’s thesis or creative component.
• Creating and implementing effective recruitment and retention strategies that attract potential students to AXED’s online learning programs.
• Engaging in scientific and professional organizations to actively promote the scholarship of teaching and learning, as well as establish meaningful collaborations.
• Securing extramural and grant funding to advance AXED’s online learning programs and curricula.

After two years of documented success, the individual may have the option to transition to a college track and become eligible for promotion, i.e., College Assistant Professor, College Associate Professor, and College Professor. A remote work option will be available, with an anticipated start date of January 2, 2026, or as negotiated.
