Job Duties and Responsibilities: Formulates, develops, and implements integrated network architectures for medium-to-large computer systems. Analyzes and determines budget requirements, current computer and network systems technology, and available vendor offerings to establish optimum computer and network architecture solutions; plans future enhancements and directions for the university-wide computer network. Develops standards for computer and network systems, to include standards for wiring, equipment, system security, and routing protocol. Provides project management of technical staff in the implementation, installation, configuration, and technical support of computer and network architecture; coordinates projects with other university departments and external organizations and agencies. Provides planning, leadership, direction, and advanced technical expertise regarding computer and network services for both local and wide area networks, and the worldwide Internet; serves as high-level technical expert in regards to computer/network systems and associated issues. Serves as primary point of contact and liaison with vendors; reviews vendor products, and coordinates and facilitates vendor interviews and presentations. Negotiates exact technical requirements with vendors; establishes contracts, and writes technical contract specifications and proposals. Designs, develops, and delivers training classes and workshops in areas of computer and network systems. Installs, configures, and maintains computer and network operating system and application software, as appropriate; provides on-call support for computer/network systems. Maintains a broad knowledge of current and emerging state-of-the-art computer/network systems technologies, architectures, and products. May develop and administer end user training to achieve efficient utilization LAN/WAN. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
For the SEN NOC Network Engineer, these duties extend to statewide broadband infrastructure and the integration of modern network technologies. This includes configuring and supporting multi-vendor environments such as Juniper, Mikrotik, Cisco, and Ciena, and maintaining routing and transport protocols including MPLS, LDP, RSVP, L2VPN, L3VPN, eVPN, VxLAN, Pseudowire, BGP, and ISIS. The position contributes to automation and scalability through Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices using tools like Ansible, Git, and scripting languages such as Bash and Python. The Engineer leverages open-source and enterprise applications such as NetBox, LibreNMS, Oxidized, Graylog, phpIPAM, and PowerDNS to maintain network documentation, performance visibility, and operational efficiency.
The Engineer also assists with shared system administration responsibilities including Linux/Ubuntu/Debian/Proxmox/Docker management, kernel and image upgrades, resource monitoring (CPU, RAM, Disk), backup operations, and maintaining automation workflows via Ansible and Git-based JSON/YAML configurations.
Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:
Associate's Degree + 4 years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's degree + 2 years of relevant experience.
