Standard Work Schedule: Shift: Swing Shift

Job Duties and Responsibilities: • Provide leadership and guidance to Los Alamos County Extension Office efforts in horticulture; providing oversight to Master Gardener volunteer program; land and water use policy; and government relations, especially as it relates to agriculture, family and consumer sciences, and 4-H.
• Provide leadership to the Los Alamos County 4-H Youth Development Program in the areas of Ag and Natural Resources. Programming will include working with 4-H youth and adult volunteers.
• Collaborate with youth-serving community organizations and agencies to help further Extension 4-H/Youth Development programs.-      
• Support annual County Fair efforts.     
• Recruit, train, and support volunteer adult and youth leaders.
• Collaborate with other Extension Agents, with State Extension Specialist, the Northern District Department Head, and other administrators, as well as outside agencies and organizations in planning and implementing the total Extension program. -    
• Maintain a favorable public image and gain acceptance for self, Extension, and New Mexico State University among county citizens.-  
• Administratively responsible to the Northern District Department Head.- 
• Provide timely reports as required.
• Extension and Outreach of the LEADS 2025 Strategic Plan, while meeting the local needs of Los Alamos County.
The Extension Agriculture/4 H (Horticulture) Agent is expected to develop and deliver high-impact and relevant educational programs and materials, in one or more of the following areas:
1. production and protection of plants in urban and suburban ornamental landscapes,
2. fruit and vegetable production and protection, including organic and IPM plant protection systems
3. native landscaping, pollinator habitats, landscape design, or ornamental horticulture

 

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience: 
Master’s degree (in hand by hire date) required. At least one degree must be in Agriculture or related field. Or may be under-filled as an Extension Associate I. Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Family and Consumer Sciences, Education or related field with a cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher required. Must complete a master’s degree within 5 years of hire date to remain employed. Promotion to assistant professor rank will be based on performance and Dean’s approval.

Equivalent Qualifications: 

Preferred Qualifications: 
Satisfactory experience in Extension or related field demonstrating ability to work with adults and/or youth preferred.
Familiarity with the 4-H Youth Development Program preferred.

Special Certification/Licensure: 
Must live in county where employed and be willing to travel and work odd hours as needed to support the program. Personal auto required, reimbursed at IRS rate per mile. Valid Driver's License required.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Environment: Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

Physical Effort: No or very limited physical effort required.

Lifting Requirements: Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking.

Risk: No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
