Position Summary

Under direction of the school principal, plan and provide for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provide an atmosphere and an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervise students in a variety of school related settings. Monitor and evaluate student outcomes. Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff and community. Develop, select and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintain appropriate records and follow required procedures and practices. Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.

Essential Functions

  1. Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time.
  2. Instructs pupils of the knowledge and skills in art, including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering, design, commercial art, art history, and three-dimensional art, following the course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities.
  3. Provides individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
  4. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, safe, and productive environment.
  5. Maintains an auditable daily record of pupil attendance and grades while evaluating each pupil’s performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepares progress reports.
  6. Instruct pupils in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
  7. Selects and requisitions books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintains required inventory records.
  8. Communicates and collaborates effectively with students, teachers, administrators, guidance counselors, and others as needed.
  9. Maintains professional competence through in-service, curriculum and developmental education activities on the school or division level or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  10. Organizes storage areas and controls use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection.
  11. Provides instruction by which pupils develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.
  12. Demonstrates techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and modeling, using standard and teacher-prepared instructional aids.
  13. Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit pupils’ work for the school and the community (may include sponsoring exhibits from outside the school).
  14. Collaborates with classroom teachers in order to integrate grade level SOLs into the art curriculum.
  15. Attends staff meetings, serves on staff committees, and sponsors co-curricular clubs as required.
  16. All other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the administration and supervision of all facets of assigned school.
  2. Thorough knowledge of prescribed School Board policies and procedures.
  3. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment.
  4. Must have the ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
  5. Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively in both oral and written formats.
  6. Ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential.
  7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, the School Board, elected officials, parents, students and the general public.

 

Qualifications, Education and Experience

  1. Hold a valid Virginia Department of Education teacher’s license or certification with appropriate endorsement in subject areas for which employed; or
  2. Has completed the requirements for a Virginia certificate or license and has filed an application for same; or
  3. Will qualify for a Virginia certificate or license prior to the effective date of employment.
  4. Prior teaching experience and/or student teaching is strongly preferred.
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Physical Requirements

  1. This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force.
  2. Work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires pushing or pulling.
  3. Work has standard vision requirements.
  4. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly.
  5. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  6. Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities.
  7. Must be mobile enough to monitor students in all instructional settings (in school and on school grounds).
  8. Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
  9. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

 

Special Requirements

  1. Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia or School Board.
  1.   May require the ability to acquire a valid driver’s license to operate division-owned/leased motor vehicles. The incumbent’s driving record will be subject to periodic review, and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual.
  2.   All candidates must successfully undergo the following pre-employment screenings: Tuberculosis Screening,     Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation, State Police Criminal History Investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), National Criminal History Investigative Search.

 

Evaluation

Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual.
