Position Purpose 
The Theater Arts Teacher in the Public Schools of Virginia plays a pivotal role in educating students in the various aspects of theater arts, including acting, directing, stagecraft, and production. The teacher will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive theater arts curriculum that aligns with state standards and fosters creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration among students.

Salary: $47,098- $72,855 (Commensurate with Experience)

Essential Functions

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive theater arts curriculum that addresses the diverse needs and interests of students while aligning with state standards and educational goals.
  • Deliver engaging and interactive lessons that cover various aspects of theater arts, including acting techniques, script analysis, stagecraft, and performance skills.
  • Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment conducive to student growth and development in theater arts.
  • Assess student progress and performance through a variety of methods, such as performances, projects, and written assignments, and provide constructive feedback to support student learning.
  • Organize and oversee extracurricular theater programs, such as drama clubs, productions, and competitions, to provide students with opportunities to further explore and showcase their talents in theater arts.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and community members to support interdisciplinary connections and enhance the overall educational experience for students.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development opportunities to stay updated on current trends, best practices, and advancements in theater arts education.
  • Maintain open and effective communication with students, parents, and stakeholders to provide regular updates on student progress, upcoming events, and opportunities in theater arts.
  • Arranges opportunities for students to present musical performances both during and after school hours.
  • Plans, rehearses, and directs students in theater programs for the school and community.
  • Instructs students in the proper care and use of equipment.
  • Organizes storage areas and controls the use of materials and equipment to prevent loss, abuse, injury, or security breach.
  • Maintains an organized and workable inventory of all production and stage equipment related to the theater program.
  • Makes minor adjustments to equipment and requests repairs as appropriate.
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Maintains thorough records for each student.
  • Selects, requisitions, and maintains books, instructional materials, and instructional aids.
  • Models’ nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Comply with all district and school policies and regulations.
  • Attends staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities.
  • Keeps abreast of developments, research, and new technology in the field of music education.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Administration.

Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Working, Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
  • Exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone and to enter data into a computer
  • See and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids.
  • Hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone.
  • Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds the ability to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.
  • Some teaching specialties (i.e., music, art, physical education, etc.) may require hearing, vision and physical coordination and/or exertion and effort in excess of those listed above.

Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required. 

Work Schedule
Standard teacher work schedule as set forth in the Teachers' Contract.

Qualifications/Certification/License:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theater Arts, Drama Education, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Teaching license/certification in Theater Arts or eligibility for licensure in the state of Virginia
  • Prior teaching experience in theater arts at the secondary level preferred
  • Strong knowledge of theater arts curriculum development, instructional strategies, and assessment practices
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
  • Passion for theater arts education and a commitment to fostering creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression in students

Experience
Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level and/or subject is a plus. 

FLSA Status:       Exempt        10-month position
