Job Duties
To provide quality library services for incarcerated individuals, to include maintaining an organized, up-to-date Media Resource Center, teaching library skills, and selecting and organizing library material.
Minimum Qualifications
Eligible for a Virginia Teaching License from the Virginia Department of Education with an endorsement in Library Media Pre K-12 with a Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university OR Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS/MSLS) or Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university and be eligible for a Librarian’s license through the Library of Virginia. Experience in library policies and procedures and managing a library in a public or educational environment.
Working Knowledge and experience in library services in an educational environment; working knowledge of general library practices, acquisitions, and supervision of library staff; ability to interact effectively with diverse population. Knowledge of Library policies and procedures and experience managing a library in a public or educational environment.
If you do not currently hold a LVA or teaching license from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), you must:
1. Be eligible and apply for a LVA (lifetime license for individuals with a Master’s of Library Science degree) or
2. Submit all documentation for a teaching license to the licensure designee for VADOC during the first 90 days of employment.
3. Be eligible for Reciprocity if has a current, out-of-state teaching license with a comparable endorsement and without any deficiencies, actions, etc. against it.
4. Obtain a teaching license in Virginia within the 1-year probationary period which is required for continuing employment at the VADOC.
