General Information:

The Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT) program within the School of Integrated Sciences (SIS) at James Madison University invites applications for two tenure-track or renewable term appointments (RTA) positions, at the Assistant Professor rank, to begin August 2025. SIS is home to undergraduate majors in ISAT, Geography, and Intelligence Analysis; a Cyber Intelligence certificate program; and an international Master of Science in ISAT program with a concentration in Environmental Management and Sustainability. ISAT also supports multiple environmental minors and a Global Supply Chain Minor in partnership with the College of Business.

This search aims to expand applied computing and AI technologies across the School of Integrated Sciences and is part of a broader SIS-wide hiring initiative with the theme “Technology for Resilient Futures.” We seek colleagues with expertise in programming in Python, relational databases and SQL, machine learning and data science, and data visualization as they apply to sociotechnical systems in energy and manufacturing.

The ISAT Program is an ABET-accredited, multidisciplinary, applied science program with roughly 300 undergraduate majors. ISAT prepares graduates with modern problem-solving skills through the strategic integration of technology, natural and social sciences, humanities, and systems thinking. Students in the ISAT program declare a concentration in one of six areas: Applied Biotechnology, Applied Computing, Energy, Environment & Sustainability, Industrial & Manufacturing Systems, or Public Interest Technology & Science. Faculty share a commitment to intellectual growth in support of true integration and leveraging their strengths to actualize impactful and socially engaged STEM education and scholarship.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Candidates must demonstrate a strong aptitude and affinity for teaching and mentoring undergraduates and the ability to teach innovative and engaging courses within ISAT. We specifically seek colleagues who can contribute across the school by applying computational thinking and methodologies to complex problems.

A typical teaching load is three courses per semester, equivalent to 60% of a faculty member’s effort, with support for diverse research and scholarship activities. Primary teaching assignments will include courses with an emphasis on programming, databases, machine learning, simulation and modeling, and/or data science. Examples include ISAT 252, 340, 341, and 400-level courses across ISAT and potentially SIS in our companion programs.

Successful candidates will leverage their computational expertise in one or both of the following areas:
Sustainable Energy: Applicants specializing in this area will contribute computational skills to topical courses in the ISAT-Energy concentration, with an emphasis on methods to drive the transition toward clean energy and transportation. Preferred areas of expertise include energy technologies and infrastructures, intelligent systems for managing and analyzing energy systems, and monitoring and enhancing energy efficiency. Ideally, successful candidates will also be knowledgeable in fundamental energy science, thermodynamics, and energy policy.
Smart Manufacturing: Applicants specializing in this area will contribute computational skills to topical courses in the ISAT-Industrial and Manufacturing Systems concentration, with an emphasis on smart manufacturing. Preferred areas of expertise include industrial robotics, manufacturing automation, cyber-physical systems, AI-driven technologies applied to manufacturing, and smart manufacturing systems. Ideally, successful candidates will also be knowledgeable in continuous improvement methods (such as Lean and Six Sigma), production planning and control, ergonomics, materials and manufacturing processes, and sustainable product and system design.

We encourage faculty to propose and develop courses in their specific areas of expertise, and there are opportunities to teach at the graduate level through the MS-ISAT Program.
Candidates must demonstrate the potential to grow and sustain an active scholarly program (i.e., research and/or application) that provides opportunities for ISAT undergraduates to get involved, aligns with the ISAT model of complex problem-solving, and supports the theme of “Technology for Resilient Futures.” While research interests may focus on any of a wide variety of applied computational fields, the candidate should demonstrate experience connecting that research to and collaborating with a broader scholarly community to address complex problems in the energy or manufacturing sectors.

Successful candidates will also support the ISAT and University mission of fostering an inclusive environment and removing barriers to participation.

 

Qualifications:

We encourage candidates with diverse applied computational expertise to apply. Experience as an environmental professional beyond academia—e.g., industry, consulting, government, or the non-profit sector—is valued, but not required. Candidates must possess one of the following:
• A Ph.D. in a relevant STEM field by August 2025 is required for tenure-track appointments.
• A Master’s degree and significant professional experience in a relevant STEM field is required for renewable term appointments (RTAs).

Successful candidates must also demonstrate:
• A commitment to engaged learning, innovative pedagogies, continuous improvement, and inclusive practices in the context of undergraduate education and mentoring.
o Experience teaching and mentoring undergraduates is preferred.
• Ability and enthusiasm to teach numerous courses within the ISAT-Applied Computing concentration, including ISAT 252, 340 and 341, and some ISAT-Energy or ISAT-IMS courses.
• A track record of effectively integrating advanced computational skills to energy or manufacturing contexts. Those with computational expertise in both energy and manufacturing are especially encouraged to apply.
• Ability to expand and integrate applied computing skills throughout the SIS curriculum.
• A strong potential for developing an active scholarly program that augments the strengths of the ISAT program and is accessible to a diverse student body.
o Preferred scholarly qualifications include a track-record of external funding and productive research collaborations.
• A strong interest in getting involved with and helping to steer program and unit-level shared governance at all stages of their career.
