General Information:
James Madison University’s Athletics Department is accepting applications for a Director of Video Services to join the Creative Services team. This position reports to the Assistant A.D. of Creative Services and Fan Engagement. Our team is looking for candidates with strong video and leadership skills. Video content will highlight the student-athlete experience at James Madison University and other aspects of 18 varsity sport programs and athletics facilities. An online portfolio is required for consideration. This is a full-time position with a comprehensive benefits package.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1) Coordinate, produce and deliver video content that is consistent with the JMU Athletics brand, aligned with department goals and targeted to inspire all constituents (fans, alumni, current student-athletes, coaches, recruits) to more deeply engage and invest in the athletics department and university. Collaborate with creative services team, sport programs and the department’s external operations teams to build strategies that apply to all multimedia content. Provide artistic vision and creative consultation to advance the JMU Athletics brand with video content.
- Develop strategy for overall video content including but not limited to social media video content (game highlights, feature videos), video board content, special events and overall department branded content
- Provide strategic direction for videography in the athletics department
- Serve as videographer lead on the creative services team, capturing creative content for all 18 varsity sport programs to be used for athletics stories, social media and video board content.
2) Directly supervise the Associate Director of Video Services and the Video Services Assistant. Ensure that all staff (fulltime/part-time/students) understand their respective responsibilities of their operational teams and assignments.
3) Create, maintain and implement an event coverage schedule for all athletic home events, special events within Athletics, and other events as assigned. This will include night and weekend work throughout the year and could also include travel. Schedule should ensure equal coverage where applicable across all 18 varsity sports.
4) Lead project management process for video requests within the athletics department. Respond to assignments in a prompt, professional manner and manage participation from other contributors. Manage equipment, video server and corresponding digital tools, video archives and other video resources.
- Maintain active inventory of video equipment, prioritizing short and long-term needs to assist with budgeting process
- Coordinate the use of videography equipment, digital tools and other video resources with the Creative Services unit
- Maintain archiving process of current and historical footage that includes in-depth logging and clipping for archival purpose
- Oversight of athletics video server, staying up-to-dates on space allocation and all service needs
5) Collaborate with departments across athletics to fulfill video requests and communicate effectively with all partners. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with partners in all external operations teams including but not limited to: JMU Duke Club, Ticketing, Fan Engagement, Athletics Communications and Broadcast, Facilities/Events. Other partners may include: Daktronics, JMU Sports Properties, all 18 varsity sport programs and numerous external video requests.
- Serve as videographer contact for all athletic needs from external operations team, communicate effectively with all partners to determine focus and direction of video materials – this will include regular team meetings
- Collaborate with University Marketing and Branding on overlapping project development, branding and overall video strategy when applicable
- Maintain relationship with JMU’s School of Media Arts and Design to encourage involvement within student team.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- A digital native who consumes and can create content for a variety of platforms
- A skilled storyteller with a passion for creative compelling content that displays the athletics departments brand and goals in a positive light
- Strong videography skills including shooting and editing, including coloring and knowledge of output settings
- Demonstrate knowledge of the video production process, camera operation, lens types, filming techniques, light design, and post-production process.
- Demonstrated experience with Adobe Creative Suite – including but not limited to Premier, After Effects
- Proficient time management and prioritization skills
- Availability on weeknights and weekends will be required
- Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Manage heavy load of deliverables while delegating projects within video staff
- Highly motivated, energetic, be able to balance multiple tasks, produce high-quality work on tight deadlines
- Dependability, consistency and willingness to take risks and learn new things.
- A team player who gets along well with others and respects the departmental reporting structure.
Additional Considerations:
- Experience supervising and mentoring staff and student workers
- Experience in Collegiate Athletics Creative Video or Professional Sports Video content
