General Information:
The Edith J. Carrier Arboretum at James Madison University is accepting
applications for a JMU student for the position of Arboretum Botany
Intern to work under the supervision of the landscape manager for 6-8 hours per week during the hours of 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Research plant identification as assigned, create computer-generated plant
sale signs, and format and order permanent plant ID signs for specimen plants.
- Assist with cataloging plant collection inventories for the arboretum’s
various feature gardens as identified on the arboretum’s self-guided brochure.
- Work with the landscape manager to obtain new plant specimen sheets
with numbers.
- Compile signage labeling supply resources and plant inventory materials,
and generate plant and pot tags for plant sales.
- Manage written records and communications regarding arboretum plant
inventories.
- Work during weekend plant sales (seasonal) when available.
-Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Candidates must be enrolled at JMU, preferably pursuing a degree related to natural science or environmental science.
-Working hours will be scheduled between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Candidates must be able to complete their 6-8 hours per week during that time.
- Be familiar with scientific nomenclature and identifying plants using a
dichotomous key.
- Possess basic computer skills including knowledge of operating Microsoft
Office Suite.
- Demonstrate written and verbal communication skills for design and
development, interpretation and execution of new and current plant ID
processes.
- Be willing and able to manage and keep a timely and consistent work week
schedule.
- Maintain written and print materials in an organized manner in order to meet
calendar deadlines.
- Be able to navigate uneven terrain and possibly lift and carry at least 20 pounds.

Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
Students must have a 2.0 or better cumulative GPA.
