General Information:

The Department of Biology at James Madison University (JMU) invites applications for a 10-month tenure-track Assistant Professor position in microbiology or related field such as immunology or parasitology. This is a full-time position with an anticipated start date of August 2026.

The successful candidate will join a thriving community of more than 60 biologists with broad sub-disciplinary diversity and preferably will expand this diversity in microbiology through expertise in areas such as, but not limited to, medical microbiology, parasitology, immunology, mycology, and virology. They will be expected to mentor primarily undergraduate students in research and maintain an externally funded, discipline-specific research program. They will also have the opportunity to mentor master’s students. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach introductory and upper-level courses in microbiology, medical microbiology, immunology and/or parasitology. Collaborative scholarship with other faculty members within and beyond the department is encouraged.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Expectations of the position include establishing and maintaining an externally funded research program that includes mentoring and publishing with student co-authors. The successful candidate will teach classes in introductory and upper-level microbiology, medical microbiology, immunology and/or parasitology in the Department of Biology. They may also have the option to develop other upper-level and/or graduate-level courses in their field of expertise.

 

Qualifications:

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in microbiology, or a related field including, but not limited to, areas such as medical microbiology, parasitology, immunology, mycology, and virology. Post-doctoral experience is preferred.
