General Information:

The Student Assistant to the Vice President’s Office for Student Affairs is an integral part of the Student Affairs Office team and supports efforts to strengthen connections between Student Affairs and the student body. This position assists with coordinating the Vice President for Student Affairs’ student engagement schedule, supporting the Student Advisory Board, and maintaining engagement tracking and audits.

Working closely with the Vice President for Student Affairs Engagement Fellow and the Student Affairs team, the student assistant contributes to engagement strategy and helps improve communication between the Student Affairs Office and students. This role also provides administrative support and assists with projects and initiatives across the office.

This position is an excellent opportunity for students interested in higher education, leadership, and student engagement to gain hands-on experience working with Student Affairs administrators while contributing to meaningful campus initiatives.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Accurately complete, sign, and submit timesheets to the Vice President for Student Affairs Engagement Fellow for each pay period. This is a condition of employment.

Provide administrative support to the Vice President for Student Affairs Engagement Fellow, Assistant Vice President, and Executive Advisor to the Vice President for Student Affairs, and Vice President for Student Affairs.

Ability to work 20 hours/week.

Attend and report updates during weekly one-on-one meetings with the Vice President for Student Affairs Engagement Fellow.

Create an engagement strategy for the Vice President for Student Affairs' attendance and engagement with students outside of one-on-one meetings.

Review, provide suggestions, and improve communication efforts between the Student Affairs Office and students.

Create and execute intentional engagement opportunities for the Vice President.

Conduct research and benchmarking of other JMU vision institutions on a variety of topics and issues that may arise. Utilize this research to make recommendations to the Assistant Vice President and Executive Advisor to the Vice President and Vice President regarding the appropriate handling of those topics and issues.

Demonstrate a high level of customer service.

Attend weekly staff meetings.

 

Qualifications:

Ability to manage time as a student employee working about 20 hours/week.

Communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff.

Collaborate with co-workers and supervisors respectfully and professionally.

Understands and appreciates the initiatives of the Vice President's Office for Student Affairs.

Must be available during business hours, 8 am - 5 pm, Monday - Friday.

Some after-hours availability is needed.

Must meet James Madison University's conditions of employment.

Conditions of Employment:  

Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
