Department Summary

The Department of Biological Sciences, one of four departments in the College of Science, has over 50 faculty, 175 graduate and 3,000 undergraduate students. Our faculty is a community of scholars dedicated to research and teaching in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Plant Biology, and Organismal environment interactions. We offer bachelor’s degrees in biology, Biochemistry, Ecology, Medical Laboratory Science, and Forensic Science, and Master’s and PhDs in Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Environmental Science. We measure our success by the success of our students and the quality of our intellectual contributions to society.

Position Overview

The Department of Biological Sciences is seeking a Student & Program Coordinator to join our team. This position plays a vital role in supporting student learning and success by coordinating the activities of the Life Science Resource Center (LSRC). The coordinator will work closely with the Advising Office to meet the needs of both BA- and BS-seeking undergraduate students. Responsibilities include assisting students with course registration, addressing questions related to financial aid applications, tracking academic progression, and facilitating the graduation filing process.

The position also provides support for the departmental graduate program, including graduate admissions, orientation, and monitoring student progress. Additional duties involve assisting with the disbursement of undergraduate and graduate scholarships and supporting Institutional Effectiveness reporting and data collection.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in related field and one year of professional related experience in coordinating or administering higher education programming or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to prioritize multiple ongoing responsibilities.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong problem solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office applications and webpage management.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms.
  • Ability to sort through and respond to a high volume of emails.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of experience tutoring high school or undergraduate students in an area(s) of the Life Sciences and related subjects.
  • Experience prioritizing and responding to a high volume of emails in a timely manner, as well as conducting or participating in virtual meeting platforms (e.g., Zoom, Teams, Skype).

Job Duties:

  • Coordinate activities of the Life Science Resource Center (LSRC), including interviewing, hiring and training of tutors, scheduling tutors, monitoring tutors, documenting tutoring center usage and preparing semester end reports, managing tutoring center website, and advertising services offered at the LRSC.
  • Coordinate undergraduate advising schedules for faculty advisors and assist with general undergraduate-related needs.
  • Assist with Med Lab Science (MLS) program admission, financial aid application, milestone progression, grade reporting requirements, clinical program completion, and graduation.
  • Coordinate departmental undergraduate scholarships, disbursal of awards, and organization of the departmental undergraduate scholarship luncheon.
  • Facilitate administration of pre- and post-term assessment surveys to students in select courses each term; tabulate data and provide to committee.
  • Assist with curriculum updates, course assessments, and other data for Institutional Effectiveness (IE) reporting; work with faculty and lab supervisors to update and maintain IE assessments; create and maintain records in departmental database.
  • Coordinate with the Graduate Admissions Committee (GATSC) and other staff to help meet programmatic needs such as graduate program admissions, milestone tracking, scholarship disbursal and associated paperwork, and related activities.
  • Assist with Graduate Orientation, progression through the graduate program, graduate student record-keeping, and communication.

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm, with extended hours during high volume periods/orientations.
