Department Summary
The University of North Texas Space Planning and Management is entrusted with stewarding one of the institution’s most finite and valuable resources: space. Our responsibilities encompass comprehensive planning, tracking, allocation, auditing, analysis, and reporting of both current and future spatial needs, all aligned with the institution’s strategic and research objectives.
As the central authority on space, our office collaborates closely with departments to develop and maintain environments that not only advance the academic mission but also support student recruitment, retention, and overall success.

Position Overview
* The Director of Space Management and Planning is responsible for understanding, tracking and analyzing the academic, research and administrative space needs on campus, and using that information to create plans and processes that support the goals of UNT. * The director will use best practices from higher education and outside industry to guide the institution and further support our accessible and inclusive community. * The director develops trusted partnerships with campus leaders and colleagues. * The director brings balance to complex situations by using strong communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, and mentors these skills in the Space Management and Planning staff. * The director is a dedicated steward for one of our university's most precious resources, space.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in related field and at least seven years' of space or facilities management experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Experience analyzing and comprehending floor plans, elevations, and CAD drawings throughout the various stages of SD, DD, and CD. * Knowledge of room type/use categories and classroom utilization mandates. * Knowledge of state and federal space reporting guidelines. * Strong written and oral communication skills. * Ability to understand building/room types and uses, space management procedures, and priorities in higher education, possibly based on experience in other settings. * Ability to work effectively with faculty, departmental administrators, and college leadership.

Preferred Qualifications
* Masters degree in architecture, planning or a related field. * Comprehensive understanding or experience with public sector or higher education business issues and planning mechanisms. * Understanding or experience meeting Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board reporting requirements . * Proficient in FM: Systems software or other similar space management software solutions * Minimum of five years' experience at a higher education institution. * Experience with strategic planning related to space and facilities. * Experience working collaboratively with university or college administrators. * Experience with Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board space reporting. * Experience in leading a space planning and management team/department.

Required License/Registration/Certifications
Possession of a valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment; ability to drive a vehicle and maintain coverage under University liability insurance policy, if required to drive University vehicles.

Job Duties:
- Oversee and direct staff in the collection and analyzation of space usage data for university use in regular reports or strategic planning, and in compliance with Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board requirements
- Identify, recommend and direct the collection of new data/resources that are needed to ensure the university makes informed decisions for proactive planning; this position will identify space management and planning gaps and drive continuous improvement through a variety of problem-solving methods
- Work with campus leadership and partners to strategically plan for each academic year and the future of UNT; and represent the Space Management department on various campus committees
- Create and maintain consistent processes that support UNTs academic and administrative goals with current space usage, while allowing flexibility to identify and support future space usage opportunities
- Research best practices and new ideas to assist with problem-solving and planning
- Maintain work-related and cost related efficiencies in managing the department and its budget for the 180plus classrooms on campus
- Supervise and assist in the professional development of staff members and student assistants
- Consistently completes expected duties in a timely manner without constant supervision. Accepts responsibility for own work and follows through on commitments.
