Department Summary
The Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) is a unique residential program for high school-aged Texas students who are high achievers and interested in mathematics and science. While living on campus in McConnell Hall, students in this two-year program complete a rigorous academic curriculum of college coursework at the University of North Texas (UNT). Instruction is by university faculty and students enjoy many of the activities of high school and the company of age mates who are intellectual peers.

Position Overview
The Academic Advisor provides individualized guidance to students by assessing their interests, aptitudes, and abilities to help them identify suitable career paths and academic programs. It connects students with campus resources that support academic success, personal growth, and professional development. The role also involves designing and implementing initiatives that promote student success and retention.
Working with minimal supervision, the employee is expected to independently plan and execute assignments while resolving issues in line with established policies and practices. While this position does not include formal supervisory duties, it offers informal support to new team members and provides on-the-job training for specific tasks and procedures. The employee may also supervise hourly or student workers.
Additional responsibilities include monitoring and advising students enrolled in the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) and assisting with recruitment efforts through various annual outreach events.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree and two years' of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.

Job Duties:
- Contact faculty to obtain course syllabi and exam dates, then build exam schedule for each semester. Monitor student academic progress (Fall, Spring, Summer if applicable), including class attendance, in order to identify students who need to improve their reading comprehension, note-taking technique, study skills, and time management. Contact parents to discuss students' academic progress. Prepare and submit reports to Associate Dean of TAMS concerning academic progress or students.
- Maintain records of students' curricular track/pathway and then advise students regarding course selection during registration periods in October and March. Verify students' schedules to ensure that students are satisfying TAMS curricula.
- Assist TAMS admissions process by (1) presenting at various Preview Day recruiting events throughout the year and (2) interviewing applicants to TAMS.
- Maintain highest level of character, integrity, and collegiality among TAMS-Honors. Attend and assist with various TAMS-Honors events, including but not limited to proctor exams (e.g., Biology, Physics); proctor the PSAT/NMSQT; TAMS Seminar; TAMS Convocation; TAMS Commencement; and Scholars Day and the Medallion Ceremony (Honors College).
- In collaboration with Associate Dean and other Academic Counselors, plan and conduct various presentations, including but not limited to Orientations (June, August, and January for first-year students); the College Applications Bootcamp; and the Early Start program (August to December).
