Position Overview

The Center for Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the University of North Texas (UNT) is seeking an Assistant or Associate Research Professor with substantial professional experience performing quantitative data analysis, data visualization, modeling, database management, and programming to address practical problems in transportation planning and policy. The candidate should have 10+ years of progressive, professional work experience, either as an academic researcher and/or as a consultant. This experience will have incorporated the extensive use of technical tools that include: geographic information systems (GIS), data analysis and visualization software, database management tools, applications for complex statistical analysis, and intermediate level programming.

The position is full-time and offers State of Texas benefits. Its funding is entirely dependent upon external contracts and research grants and the successful candidate will be expected, on a recurring basis, to proactively support or lead pursuits for additional external funding.

The position is based in Austin, Texas and is “research only”. Responsibilities do not include student teaching or departmental service at UNT.

Responsibilities:

Data Analysis
• Conduct sophisticated analyses of large and complex transportation and economic data sets
• Identify, select, and apply robust methodologies for transportation and economic analyses
• Identify data quality issues and apply solutions
• Offer technical support for data manipulation, cleaning, and transformation

Data Management and Visualization
• Assist in designing and building advanced, interactive dashboards using industry-standard tools (e.g., Tableau, Microsoft BI, etc.)
• Provide guidance on dashboard layout, user experience, and data integration
• Advise on best practices for dashboard performance and optimization
• Develop and maintain training materials, tutorials, and documentation related to data visualization and dashboard creation
• Stay up-to-date on current trends and best practices in database management and data visualization.

Modeling
• Perform analysis using travel demand modeling, traffic simulation models, or other relevant transportation planning tools
Map Making and Spatial Analysis
• Analyze data and produce maps using ArcGIS Pro for incorporation into reports, PowerPoint presentations, and online platforms, as well as for stand-alone presentation
• Work with a variety of geographic data sources and raster images
• Create online, interactive mapping sites using ESRI Experience, ESRI StoryMap, or other related services or software
Report Writing and Presentation
• Assist with documenting data analysis methods and findings in technical reports and as PowerPoint presentations
• Present research findings in professional settings
• Develop or support work proposals to pursue additional funding

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education
• Ph.D. degree in a related field (e.g., Geography, Data Science, Civil Engineering, Economics, or highly relevant experience).
• Exceptionally strong candidates with a master’s degree, significant professional experience, and extraordinary skill sets will be considered

Required Experience
• 10+ years of full-time professional experience in an academic research or consulting setting
• Extensive experience manipulating large data sets, cleaning data, and incorporating these data into advanced software
• Proven experience in designing and executing quantitative analysis that addresses complex problems
• Proven experience applying a range of programming and technical tools to inform transportation planning and policy analysis

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Proficient in GIS (i.e., ArcGIS Pro, ESRI Experience, ESRI StoryMaps, etc.)
• Proficient in data visualization and dashboard software (e.g., Tableau, Microsoft BI, etc.)
• Proficient in database management and technical tools (e.g., Web Service development, Microsoft Document Object Models, SQL databases, Microsoft Access, etc.)
• Experienced with advanced statistical analysis using SAS, SPSS, Matlab, R, etc.
• Experience with transportation modeling software (e.g., TransCAD, Cube, Computational Fluid Dynamics, etc.)
• Proficient in data analysis tools and programming languages (e.g., C++, C#, C, Python, Java, JavaScript, HTML, Visual Basic, Fortran, etc.)
• Detailed oriented and diligent in the pursuit of quality assurance/quality control
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and concise manner
• Proven problem-solving and critical thinking skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Strong organizational and time-management skills

Preferred Qualifications

Strong preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated ability to obtain funds from external sources.
