Department Summary
Founded in 1977, the mission of the Intensive English Language Institute at the University of North Texas is to provide the highest quality academic English instruction, student services, and professional development programs for its students. The IELI provides twenty weekly contact hours of instruction for students in up to six different levels of English proficiency in five half-semester-long sessions per year. Students who successfully complete IELI meet the English language requirement to matriculate into UNT degree programs. The IELI is housed within UNT’s International Affairs and works in close cooperation with numerous administrative and academic units throughout campus.

Position Overview
The Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) at the University of North Texas seeks qualified individuals for Adjunct Instructor and welcomes applicants at any time. This posting is for IELI sessions in Fall 2025, Spring 2026, and Summer 2026. The specific courses involved may vary from session to session and openings to teach these courses to develop on a periodic basis, depending on department teaching needs.
Teach one or two IELI courses selected from Communication (Levels 1-6) and Writing/Grammar (Levels 1-6) 10 (half-time) to 20 (full-time) contact hours per week.
Develop syllabi in collaboration with and approved by the Associate Director for one (half-time) or two (full-time) classes as assigned by IELI. Conduct diagnostic testing of students during Week One during class to verify student placement in your class(es). Prepare and update as necessary curriculum materials for assigned courses. Provide instruction using the approved texts, curriculum plans, and other teaching materials designated for the class and level. Administer the required testing, grading, entering attendance, and other classroom-related services for each course you teach. Report to IELI Administration issues with student absences, unusual or unruly behavior, and performance. Provides weekly office hours which are publicized on the syllabus. Perform other teaching duties as required.
Starting Dates “Class Duties will commence on August 18, 2025, for Fall Semester, January 12, 2026 for Spring Semester, and June 1, 2026, for Summer Session. All classes are taught onsite M-F at the Denton, Texas campus.
Teachers are invited to attend and participate in a pre-term meeting the Friday morning prior to classes beginning when they come in to pick up their materials for classes.

Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in TESOL or closely related field. Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching ESL at a university-based IEP focused on English for Academic Purposes. Experience teaching all language skills. Successful experience adapting classroom content to better serve diverse students’ needs. Successful experience in teaching remote classes using video conferencing and a learning management system (e.g., Canvas).

Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of a second language. Experience of living and/or working overseas. Experience teaching at the IELI in Denton or Hirakata
