Department Summary

The Office of Disability Access (ODA) at the University of North Texas exists to prevent discrimination on the basis of disability and to help students reach a higher level of independence. It is the mission of the ODA to engage and collaborate with faculty and other campus partners to ensure students with disabilities at the University of North Texas have access to all university programs, services, and activities; promote equity and inclusion for students with disabilities; and provide a platform for accessible pedagogical innovation.

Position Overview

The Office of Disability Access at the University of North Texas is seeking to hire an Access Coordinator to join our team. Coordinators are primarily responsible for facilitating access to the academic programs, services, activities, and facilities of the institution. This position will work with a caseload of students, including students with autism, and serve as a liaison to other on campus resources who work with this student population for better coordination of services and resources; collaborates with students, faculty, and staff to create an accessible campus environment; works one-on-one with students with disabilities to determine barriers to access; provide university-wide consultation, education and training on the social construction of disability and the intersections of disability with social and physical environments; and assist with coordination of student accommodation services.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field and two years of student services, student affairs, counseling, advising, or related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Excellent public speaking skills with experience in conducting training workshops. Ability to provide leadership and mentoring to student populations. Experience in networking across departments and programs. Ability to communicate and work with a diverse population. Strong organizational skills and ability to simultaneously execute multiple projects. Excellent verbal and written communication, and computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters degree in rehabilitation counseling, counseling, instructional design, computer science, special education, access technology, education or a related field .Two years of experience providing services to individuals with disabilities, specifically students with autism spectrum disorder in postsecondary education. Knowledge of laws involving students with disabilities (ADA, 504, 508, FERPA, FHA, etc.).Experience providing assistance and training to college students, faculty, and staff. Knowledge of using various software and hardware, including assistive technology. Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with a diverse population.

Job Duties

  • Manage caseload of students, e.g. accommodation coordination, referral to resources, advising, and course registration. Maintains thorough and accurate records relating to student documentation, service requests, and communications 
  • Review student referenced disability related documentation for service eligibility. Assess the interaction of the students disability with the environment to determine reasonable accommodations. Responsive to student communications. Conduct student registration meetings to determine reasonable accommodations and need for evaluation or referrals. 
  • Assist with coordination of student accommodation services. 
  • Communicate effectively and diplomatically with faculty, staff, and students in addressing ODA accommodation procedures 
  • Maintain cordial relationships with faculty, staff and students on campus by being responsive to students, faculty, and staff requests and communications and working cooperatively with other student services entities,
