Department Summary

The Learning Commons department's mission is to strengthen academic and professional skills through providing one-on-one and group tutoring, supplemental academic resources, and student worker development opportunities to facilitate students’ success in their time at UNT Dallas and in future graduate programs and careers. The Learning Commons offers one-on-one and/or non-directive tutoring support for UNT Dallas students via face-to-face and online methods. The department assist students with study skills, assignments, homework, and exam preparation. The Learning Commons encompasses all of UNT Dallas’ tutoring services, including a Math Lab, Writing Center, and Peer Tutoring (non-math and writing subjects).

Position Overview

The Learning Commons Director is responsible for providing the vision and direction for the Learning Commons team and directs all tutoring initiatives for the university. This is an educational administrator position, which requires specialized knowledge in the area of best practices in learning assistance. The Director manages a budget comprised from designated tuition, student fees, and grants funding sources and hires, develops, supervises and evaluates employees including fulltime and parttime professional staff and student paraprofessionals. Reporting to the Assistant Provost, the Director provides support for related initiatives and projects as needed. Employees in this classification receive minimal supervision within a broad framework of policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with and 4 years of experience in tutoring and learning support services.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate). Knowledge of Texas rules and regulations related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate). Ability to communicate effectively with everyone verbally and in writing. Strong presentation skills. Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills. Ability to direct a wide variety of services efficiently in a fast paced environment. Ability to work independently and with others. Ability to utilize computer technology to access data, maintain records and generate reports.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters degree with at least 1 year of supervisory experience and 5 years relevant experience in tutoring and learning support services. Bilingual. Experience using Canvas LMS, Microsoft Office programs, and Qualtrics survey software.

Job Duties

  • Directs, hires, trains, supervises and evaluates staff and student workers.
  • Promotes the development of marketable skills in student paraprofessionals.
  • Provides vision and energizes the future course of the Learning Commons utilizing best practices and innovative ideas to support student persistence and graduation.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of services and utilizes data to make decisions.
  • Directs the use of budget and resources to maximize use and seeks alternative funding sources such as grants and collaborative funding with other stakeholders on campus.
  • Communicate effectively, written and oral forms, to work collaboratively with student success stakeholders on campus.
  • Promotes academic integrity in tutors and those seeking tutoring.
  • Shares reports with administrators and faculty to inform decisions related to student success.
  • Provide administrative support for the Assistant Provost on special projects related to student persistence and graduation.
  • Maintains standard operating procedures for all aspects of the department to promote continuity in business practices and adheres to university policy and procedure.
