Position Overview

The Communications Specialist works within the User Interfaces unit of the Libraries’ Digital Libraries Division to create, edit, publish, and maintain content across a wide range of web-based platforms and digital services supported by the University Libraries. This position plays a key role in ensuring that library web content is accurate, accessible, visually engaging, and aligned with institutional standards and user needs.

Responsibilities include authoring and editing web content; managing images and media assets; supporting ongoing efforts to review, assess, and improve the quality, usability, and accessibility of library websites and digital collection interfaces, and aiding departmental personnel in the inventory and care for departmentally-managed cameras and hardware. The position also participates in user-centered design and user experience (UX) initiatives, including usability testing, surveys, and analysis conducted within the department.

The Communications Specialist may oversee one or more student assistant positions engaged in graphic design, image creation, and other media production for web-based publication. The position works closely with staff across all divisions of the Libraries and collaborates daily with web developers, programmers, information design specialists, and graphic and print designers.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field and two years of experience in writing and/or editing publications; or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to conceptualize, write and edit, accurate and concise content for university audiences. Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, conduct multiple tasks and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to visually inspect print and online copy when self editing or editing the copy of others. Works effectively within a team and effectively works closely with other staff, faculty, and students toward a common goal. Knowledge of how to contact sources and ability to conduct interviews and take accurate notes. Knowledge of spelling, grammar, punctuation and Associated Press and Chicago Manual styles. Knowledge of writing guidelines for various media and ability to create unique copy for each format (print, online, broadcast). Understanding of institutional strategy (or ability to quickly assimilate) and ability to integrate the strategy into modes of communication.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in web content development, technical writing and/or copy editing
• Basic knowledge of web development fundamentals: HTML, Graphic Design
• Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, git version control practices
• Knowledge of library information systems such as Libguides, or LibCal.
• Familiarity with UNT Libraries Digital Libraries and/or Special Collections workflows for the production of metadata.
• Basic principals of photography, DSLR camera operation, image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, or Illustrator
• Experience and/or familiarity with accessibility-remediation tools, assistive technologies
• Excellent organizational and communication skills
• Excellent note taking/observation skills
• Problem solving skills

Job Duties

  • CONTENT SUPERVISION LIBRARY WEBSITES
    • Workflows are established so that features, news, and events items are regularly updated on the main library website.
    • Regular communications are maintained with library stakeholders for other main library website content, forms, etc.
    • Modifications to content are addressed in a timely fashion. 
    • Oversight and loading of graphic design work, photos, and other images is ongoing. 
    • Provide website maintenance to the University Press. Monthly updates are completed as requested by the Director. 
    • Partner and collection descriptions, as well as on this day features in the Digital Library, Portal to Texas History, and Gateway to Oklahoma are created, edited, and overseen as assigned. 
    • Communication with library stakeholders, students, faculty/staff has occurred producing actionable changes to library website content. 
    • Content Development activities within SpringShare LibGuides as assigned.
    • Content Development activities within Qualtrics as assigned. 
  • STAFF ADMINISTRATION AND BUDGETS
    • Assigns tasks to student assistants. Student skills and qualifications are well utilized. Tasks are completed satisfactorily by stated deadline. 
    • Administers student wage budget. Student work hours do not exceed allocation for fiscal year. 
  • MISCELLANEOUS
    • Serves on committees work groups as elected or appointed. Complete assigned duties to the satisfaction of the Unit Head and committee chair. 
    • Completes special assignments, investigations, projects for the Unit as directed by supervisor. Complete to the satisfaction of the Asst. Dean, Unit Head, committee chair, or other official by the deadline specified. 
    • Maintains interdepartmental library cooperation and good working relationships with clients, business contacts, faculty, students staff. Successful interaction in the opinion of the Unit Head. 
    • Participates in Nondiscrimination Sexual Harassment Training. 
    • Demonstrates ability to learn and apply new web development technologies. New technologies are learned and applied as requested by Unit Head.
