UNT System Information Technology is a component of The University of North Texas System. The mission of UNT System Information Technology is simple: to be the best at delivering customer-aligned IT solutions and services. Our services are provided to all member institutions using an IT shared services governance model.

UNT System Information Technology provides the primary technology used by all campuses to support their operations. Position Overview

The Network Engineer is responsible for engineering, implementing, and delivering network solutions that align with approved architectural standards and institutional security requirements for the University of North Texas System. This role focuses on translating approved designs into production-ready solutions, executing complex and non-standard changes, and serving as an escalation point for operational issues that require engineering intervention.
The position operates within a lifecycle-based model in which Architecture defines standards and designs, Engineering builds and integrates solutions, and Operations sustains production services. The Network Engineer is expected to incorporate security considerations into all engineering activities, including firewall policy, segmentation, access controls, and secure service integration, while operating under architectural governance and in coordination with Information Security.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related field and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in network implementation, operations, or support; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Industry-recognized networking certifications are preferred. Employees in this job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure and they must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Working knowledge of enterprise network engineering principles, including routing, switching, wireless, wide area networking, and network security fundamentals.
* Ability to design and implement network solutions aligned to approved standards, security models, and architectural guidance.
* Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to resolve complex technical issues, document designs and implementations, and collaborate effectively with Operations, Architecture, and Information Security.
* Ability to manage multiple engineering efforts simultaneously and exercise sound technical judgment within defined governance boundaries.

Preferred Qualifications

• Industry-recognized networking certifications (e.g., CCNP, CCIE, JNCIS, JNCIP, or equivalent)
• Experience engineering enterprise campus, data center, and WAN network solutions
• Experience with firewall policy engineering, network segmentation, and secure access design
• Experience integrating network services with identity and access management systems
• Familiarity with network automation frameworks and infrastructure-as-code concepts
• Experience working within a formal architecture and change governance model

Job Duties

  • Engineer and implement network solutions aligned with approved architectural standards and reference designs. 
  • Design and implement complex and non-standard network changes, including routing, switching, wireless, and WAN services.
  • Engineer firewall policies, segmentation, and secure network access in alignment with approved security models. 
  • Serve as an escalation point for operational issues requiring engineering analysis and remediation. 
  • Support service introductions by validating designs, implementation plans, and operational readiness. 
  • Collaborate with Network Architecture on design reviews, deviations, and continuous improvement initiatives. 
  • Partner with Information Security to implement network controls that align with institutional security requirements.
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation, diagrams, and implementation standards. 
  • Opportunities for network automation Identify and efficiency improvements.
