Department Summary

The Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) is a unique residential program for high school-aged Texas students who are high achievers and interested in mathematics and science. While living on campus in McConnell Hall, students in this two-year program complete a rigorous academic curriculum of college coursework at the University of North Texas (UNT). Instruction is by university faculty. There are no high school courses taught, but students enjoy many of the activities of high school and the company of age mates who are intellectual peers.

Position Overview

This position serves as the chief deputy of the Director of Student Life. Specific responsibilities include supervision and evaluation of McConnell Hall residence life staff; supervision of the academy discipline system; and supervision of all aspects of student programming.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and at least four years relevant experience in student programming or services, student affairs, or other professionally related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Job Duties

  • Staff Supervision & Leadership: Manage four Program Advisors. Establish schedules, lead weekly staff meetings, conduct biweekly one-on-ones, and provide formal performance evaluations.
  • Act as Director in their absence.
  • Student Conduct & Grievances: Lead disciplinary hearings and appeals for high-level policy violations.
  • Resolve parent and student grievances politely.
  • Maintain accurate records and report decisions to the Director.
  • Training & Crisis Management: Design and run three annual Residence Life training programs (August, January, and May).
  • Update the On-Call manual. Lead emergency response and safety measures for staff.
  • Operations & Policy: Partner with the Director to update the TAMS Student Handbook annually.
  • Manage the programming space reservation calendar. Oversee maintenance and driver requests for the eight-vehicle fleet.
  • Budget Oversight: Manage the student activities budget. Allocate semester spending for student groups.
  • Track financial records monthly with administrative staff and recommend capital expenditures.
  • Advising & Community Building: Actively engage with residents to know at least 75% of the student body by sight.
  • Personally advise at least one student club.
  • Coach staff on effective student advising.
  • Special Events Planning: Direct and advise staff on major campus traditions and events. This includes Summer/Fall Orientation, Rosecutting, Senior Day, Prom, and Graduation.
  • Community Service Tracking: Monitor student volunteer records, verify service hours, and find innovative ways to boost student participation.
  • Submit year-end service reports to the Director.
