Position Overview

We are seeking an Assistant or Associate Professor who will enhance the political science program’s and our school’s ability to design and implement academic programs related to the UNT’s National Security and Economic Strategy (NSES) program. The faculty member will also be expected to contribute to the political science and international studies program’s Conflict and Human Security minor. This position will significantly augment our program’s ability to offer courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels on Civil Wars, Terrorism, Insurgencies, and Security Studies. This position also is expected to contribute to training our graduate students in cutting edge methodologies, such as survival/hazard analysis, time series panel regression analysis, geospatial mapping and analysis, and/or other advanced quantitative methods, which is a critical part of any research program related to national security and conflict studies.

Developing such analytical skills will enhance the marketability and skills of both our undergraduate and graduate students seeking employment in the national security sector. Further, skills in conflict management and peace building would provide excellent opportunities for employment with national and international organizations interested in conflict management and security analysis (such as the US State Department, Department of Defense, United Nations, World Bank, etc.).

This is an excellent opportunity to complement the development of our newly created ImpactLab for Applied Social Science Research, directed by Divisional Dean Lisa Henry, which is beginning to sponsor research projects that benefit local communities and businesses. One area that might be explored is training in national security and risk analysis for businesses such as Charles Schwab, Merrill Lynch, and others who are interested assessing investment risk in conflict areas of the world. Also graduates from our National Security and Economic Strategy program may find opportunities with intelligence studies and threat assessment in various parts of the world.

We seek at either the associate or assistant rank a scholar who could help provide leadership in developing the NSES program and enhance the political science program’s research and teaching capabilities in Civil Wars, Peace and Conflict studies, Terrorism, Security Studies, Resource Scarcity and National Security, and Environmental Degradation and Conflict.

The teaching load is expected to be be 2:2. Courses include PSCI 3500 (Human Security) PSCI 3600 (Comparative Politics) PSCI 4640 (Revolution and Political Violence) PSCI 4662 (Civil-Military Relations) PSCI 6660 (Civil Wars).
