About the role
The Aboriginal Student Support Officer provides culturally safe, practical support to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students stay engaged, progress and complete their studies. As a key link between students, faculties and support services, you will help students access the right support at the right time. You will build trusted relationships, identify individual needs and connect students with appropriate educational, wellbeing and community services. You will coordinate referrals, monitor student progress and follow up to ensure support is accessible and responsive to barriers affecting participation and completion.
The position is based at Campbelltown Campus and requires travel to other campuses across Western Sydney, South West Sydney and the Blue Mountains.
Being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement of this role. Your lived experience, cultural knowledge and community connections are central to building trust, providing culturally responsive support and strengthening outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
About You
You are passionate about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student success and understand the importance of culture, community and belonging in education. You bring strong communication skills and the ability to build respectful, effective relationships with students, colleagues and community organisations.
You are skilled at identifying student needs and acting as a trusted link between students and the services they need to complete their studies. You build effective relationships with internal teams and external providers to coordinate culturally safe, timely support. You follow through on referrals and maintain clear communication with students and service providers to ensure students can access support and address barriers to their progress and completion.
You approach sensitive situations with sound judgement, empathy and professionalism. You are resilient and adaptable, manage conflict constructively and maintain confidentiality. You are confident using Microsoft 365 and bring strong administration and organisational skills to maintain accurate records, coordinate support and follow through on agreed actions. Experience in an education setting is highly desirable. Your approach reflects TAFE NSW’s values of Customer First, Integrity, Collaboration and Excellence.
