Job Summary

$90,470 / year or higher DOQ + Full-Time County Benefits 

Performs advanced professional work managing law enforcement activities for assigned area.

Responsibilities

• Provides effective supervision of assigned staff including selection, performance management, employee relations, training, prioritizing and assigning work and related activities.
• Performs advanced professional, technical, supervisory and administrative police work in the enforcement of laws, and the performance of related activities to maintain public peace, implement the department’s community policing approach to policing, protect life and property, and directing all police officers during an assigned shift or for an assigned unit or units.
• Monitors all calls for service and ensures that they are answered and dealt with in a timely manner; ensures that activities of assigned shift or unit are conducted in accordance with pertinent State and Federal laws, and departmental policy; reviews all required State, County, and Federal police reports for content, accuracy, and compliance with departmental reporting standards.
• Determines adequate manpower for any given call or event and makes assignments accordingly including the call out of specialized units or off-duty personnel; prepares shift or unit schedules regularly for assigned shift; monitors, and evaluates performance of assigned personnel; conducts performance evaluations, provides counseling, and recommends disciplinary actions as necessary.
• Investigates, and makes recommendations to the Division Commander regarding citizens’ complaints relating to violations of County Ordinances, State laws, department and County policy made by citizens about County officers.
• Promotes and ensures proper employee training and compliance with County Safety Program and departmental safety procedures; ensures that all equipment, materials, and work conditions are adequately maintained to prevent accidents.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• A minimum of 2 years of experience with the James City County Police Department as a Police Sergeant or have comparable supervisory experience. Must have completed any applicable introductory period prior to final decision.
• Must possess, or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County’s criteria.
• Successful completion of 160 hours of Federal, State, or local certified training including Radar Operator and Intoxilyzer Operator Certification or training in other specialty areas approved by the Police Chief.
• Must not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty or no contest to a felony; an offence that would be a felony if committed in Virginia; certain crimes involving moral turpitude; or other offenses that cannot be explained to the satisfaction of Police Chief.
• Must be a citizen of the United States and be at least 21 years old at time of hire.
• Knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures; civil and criminal statutes; rules and regulations of the James City County Police Department; and geography of the County; knowledge of the use of firearms, other law enforcement equipment and the safe and effective use of motor vehicles; principles and processes for providing customer service including setting and meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction; leadership techniques, principles and procedures to assign work, schedule, supervise, train and evaluate the work of assigned staff.
• Lieutenants are required to attend at least one long-term leadership school approved by the Chief of Police.
• Skill in use of computer software, especially Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to individuals, groups and the general public; establish and maintain working relationships with employees, department heads, County officials and representatives from the private sector or other jurisdictions and the public.
