Performs responsible work for the development and communication of the Fire Department’s Community Risk Reduction (CRR), educational programs, and public relations activities.

Responsibilities
• Develops, coordinates, presents and oversees CRR education programs and training for the community. • Identifies and develops fire safety intervention programs for at-risk communities. • Liaisons with other County departments and programs involving common audiences related to outreach and services. • Prepares and conducts comprehensive fire and life safety prevention/education programs for public and private schools, civic groups, businesses and social organizations; researches material, designs handouts materials and visual aids. • Coordinates events to include Fire Prevention Week, Emergency Medical Servies (EMS) Week, static displays and other outreach initiatives. • Coordinates with Department company officers for fire station tours, public events and program delivery. • Analyzes Department incident reporting and statistics for program development or adjustment; prepares a variety of reports, proposals, and presentations on various fire safety and public education related topics. • Prepares and issues news releases, stories and scripts to the news media regarding public education and related activities. • Maintains updated public education information on a variety of platforms including the Department website and social media accounts. • Coordinates smoke alarm program that provides alarms, batteries, and public assistance with residential smoke alarms. • Coordinates Child Safety Seat Program and Juvenile Fire Setter Program. • Researches and applies for grants to fund new and existing programs on the federal, state, and local level. • Procures, maintains, and distributes program supplies. • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate’s degree in Education, Public Administration or related field; Bachelor’s degree preferred;some experience developing education and training programs and successfully instructing students in a traditional classroom setting, online, and/or hybrid. • Must possess, or within 30 days of hire, a valid state-issued driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County’s criteria; must possess reliable transportation to work site(s). • Knowledge of organizing, planning, coordinating, managing, and directing comprehensive education projects. • Ability to communicate and work effectively with citizens, staff, and community organizations.

Introductory Period: 6 months
Post Hire Requirements • Must maintain all required certifications. • Must maintain a state-issued driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. • Must obtain Virginia Communicating with your Community, Fire and Life Safety Educator I and II certifications. • OIG Exclusion List check.
Job Locations and Conditions • Duties are performed in the community and in an office setting; operates vehicle; computer keyboard and mouse and other standard office equipment. Operates audio-visual equipment and other necessary equipment to perform presentations in-person and virtually. • Eligible for intermittent telework. • Must have the ability to travel among various work sites and work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends. • Performs work safely in accordance with department safety procedures and County Safety Program; operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work condition or practice to supervisor. • May be required to report to work to serve customers during emergency conditions; may be assigned to report at a different time and location and to perform different duties as necessary
