Performs advanced work supervising staff, planning, and overseeing maintenance and repair actions for the Grounds Maintenance Division.

Responsibilities
• Provides effective supervision of assigned staff, including selection, performance management, employee relations, training, prioritizing, and assigning work and related activities. • Coordinates all activities to maintain all County, parks and school grounds to include landscape areas, roadway maintenance, trails, parking areas, ball courts, athletic fields, and stormwater facilities. • Assists with the oversight of contracts and supports developing new contracts. • Maintains computerized maintenance management system for the division, including scheduling preventive and corrective maintenance, and coordinates maintenance and repair with external agencies. • Reviews plans and specifications, recommends modifications to existing infrastructure, and coordinates various maintenance projects. • Promotes and ensures training, proper work site protection techniques, and compliance with the County safety program and departmental safety procedures; ensures equipment, materials, and work conditions are adequately maintained to prevent accidents. Conducts safety training as assigned; performs administrative duties including preparation of work logs, field and facility reports. • Acts in the absence of Parks and Grounds Maintenance Superintendent. • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate’s degree; extensive experience in grounds maintenance work; considerable supervisory experience; some coursework in landscape maintenance/design, athletic field maintenance, and stormwater facility maintenance preferred. • Must possess or be able to obtain within 12 months of hire a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with airbrake and tanker endorsement and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County’s criteria. • Must possess or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire a valid commercial Virginia Pesticide applicator license. • Must possess or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire a valid certified fertilizer applicator license. • Knowledge of operational and maintenance requirements of parks and grounds areas and equipment; the principles, practices and techniques of maintenance planning, scheduling and coordinating; effective safety standards, procedures, practices and techniques pertaining to grounds maintenance and equipment; sport turf management for all types of athletic fields and ability to lay out athletic fields; knowledge of leadership techniques, principles and procedures to assign work, schedule, supervise, train and evaluate the work of assigned staff. • Skill in use of computer software, especially Microsoft Office Suite. • Ability to plan, organize and direct the work of staff and assist outside organizations; supervise maintenance projects; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with all County employees and the public.
