We are the Rural Fire Service (RFS), a dedicated community of volunteers providing fire and emergency services to approximately 95% of NSW. When you work with the RFS, you join a passionate team committed to protecting our neighbours, the wider community, and the environment from the threat of bushfires and other emergencies. With over 70,000 volunteer members and staff, we embody the spirit of mutual respect, support, friendship, and camaraderie. We are one team with many players, united by a single purpose. If you share our passion for community service and environmental protection, we want to hear from you! Become a part of our mission to safeguard lives and our cherished NSW landscapes.

What you’ll be doing:

Are you a cyber security professional who enjoys investigating threats, solving technical problems and helping keep information and systems secure? Are you passionate about using your skills to support emergency services and the communities they protect?

We are seeking a proactive and collaborative Cyber Security Officer to join our ICT team. In this role, you will monitor and respond to security alerts, investigate vulnerabilities and support the implementation of security controls across NSW RFS systems and services. You will contribute to incident response, security improvement projects and compliance activities, while working closely with ICT teams and business stakeholders to provide practical advice and promote cyber security awareness. Your work will help strengthen our cyber resilience and protect the technology and information our members rely on.

As the Cyber Security Officer, you will help protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of NSW RFS information, systems and services. You will support day-to-day cyber security operations by monitoring security events, investigating threats and vulnerabilities, and assisting with the implementation and improvement of security controls.
You will work closely with the Chief Information Security Officer, the Cyber Security team, ICT teams and business stakeholders to support secure and reliable technology services. You will also contribute to incident response, security improvement projects and compliance activities, while providing practical advice and promoting cyber security awareness across the organisation.

To thrive in this role, you will have:

  • A sound understanding of cyber security principles across identity, endpoint, network, cloud, application and information protection.
  • Experience supporting security operations, vulnerability management, security monitoring or cyber investigations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to investigate security issues, assess risks and recommend practical mitigation strategies.
  • The ability to support incident response and recovery activities, collect evidence and accurately document findings.
  • Knowledge of cyber security frameworks and standards such as the NSW Cyber Security Policy, Essential Eight, ISO 27001 or the NIST Cyber Security Framework.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts and provide practical advice to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A collaborative approach to working with ICT teams and business stakeholders to implement security controls and support improvement initiatives.
  • Sound judgement to recognise and escalate complex or high-risk security matters appropriately.
  • A commitment to maintaining accurate documentation, promoting cyber security awareness and continuously improving security practices.
  • An appreciation of the needs of a volunteer-based community service.
  • A Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Cyber Security, Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • A current driver licence and willingness to travel.
