About this Position

Position Summary:

The Senior Human Resources Business Partner (Sr. HRBP) serves as a strategic consultant and trusted advisor to university leadership, providing expertise in human capital strategies that align with the mission, values, and culture of a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). The Sr. HRBP drives institutional effectiveness by partnering with academic and administrative departments to support initiatives related to workforce planning, employee engagement, performance management, organizational development, and equity-centered HR practices.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with deans, directors, department heads, and university executives to develop and implement people strategies that foster a high-performing, inclusive work environment.

  • Lead and support efforts that promote employee engagement, retention, professional development, and succession planning.

  • Serve as a champion for equity, inclusion, and cultural responsiveness in all HR policies and practices.

  • Provide strategic guidance on complex employee relations issues and conduct or oversee thorough investigations as needed.

  • Collaborate with HR colleagues to design and implement performance management tools, career frameworks, and recognition programs tailored to the HBCU context.

  • Utilize workforce analytics to identify trends, anticipate needs, and inform HR and university-wide decision-making.

  • Coach managers and leaders on effective talent management, communication, and leadership development.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and university employment laws and regulations.

  • Contribute to the development and refinement of HR policies, procedures, and systems to support institutional excellence.

  • Act as a liaison between employees and leadership to foster open dialogue, trust, and transparency.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's
    • Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development, or a related field.

    (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
    • Minimum of 7 years of progressive HR experience, with at least 3 years in a strategic HRBP or leadership role.

    • Demonstrated knowledge of employment law, employee relations, and HR best practices.

  • Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:
  • Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:
    • Strong interpersonal, coaching, and influencing skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's
    • Human Resources, Organizational Leadership, or related discipline.

    • Experience working in higher education, particularly at an HBCU or minority-serving institution.
    • Proven experience supporting faculty and academic personnel matters.
  • Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:
    • Professional HR certification (e.g., SHRM-SCP, SPHR).
