Work that matters

A three-year Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available within a collaborative research team with Professor Scott Smith and Dr Tafsirojjaman (Tafsir) in the School of Civil Engineering and Construction Management. The successful applicant will work in the area of advanced fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites for structural engineering applications, durability assessment, and sustainable infrastructure systems, with opportunities to work with HDR students.

This role is ideal for a researcher who thrives in a focused academic environment while contributing to a small collegial team. You will balance independent research with collaborative work.

The Postdoctoral researcher is essential to manage project delivery, coordinate day-to-day research activities, and ensure high-quality research outcomes. The role will also involve liaising with the industry partner, supporting and guiding PhD students, and contributing to the successful and timely delivery of all project objectives.

To join our community and thrive in this role, you will likely have the following skills and experience:

Selection criteria/Experience

  1. A PhD in Civil Engineering specialising in Structural Engineering
  2. A track record of research, relative to the career opportunity in the field of (i) Publications and/or project experience in FRP composites for structural applications (e.g., bridges, utility structures, rehabilitation); (ii) Proven contribution to experimental and/or numerical/analytical studies on structural behaviour (e.g., strength, fatigue, creep); (iii) Research outputs related to durability, long-term performance, or sustainability of construction materials including Carbon Footprint.
  3. Highly self-motivated with the knowledge and skills to undertake research in the structures discipline that includes:
    (i) Characterisation of FRP materials (short- and long-term) in line with relevant standards (e.g., CD368): Design of Fibre Reinforced Polymer Bridges and Highway Structures or similar); (ii) Design, material development, and full-scale structural testing (e.g., bending, shear, deflection) of FRP components such as bridge panels or cross arms; (iii) Environmental durability assessment, service life and Carbon Footprint evaluation of composite structures.
  4. Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a professional and collegial manner (academic and professional staff and students) and willingness to engage and collaborate with the broader University and Industry to establish collaborative multi-disciplinary research outcomes.
  5. Ability to supervise and motivate undergraduate and post graduate students including encouraging intellectual development and career aspirations.
  6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the writing of journal articles and grant applications, and the ability to communicate scientific and engineering ideas to a range of audiences.
