We’re looking for an Event Claims Specialist to join our team and lead the management of high-value, complex and escalated disaster and event claims. This is a senior, influential role where you’ll apply deep technical expertise, strategic thinking and strong advocacy to resolve challenging claims, while mentoring others and helping shape best-practice event claims outcomes across the business.
What you’ll do
- Manage and resolve high-value, complex and challenging disaster and event claims across all classes of insurance
- Lead the handling of escalated, disputed and complaint claims, including those in formal dispute resolution or litigation
- Represent Suncorp New Zealand at mediations, Disputes Tribunals and other negotiation forums
- Apply strong strategy, negotiation and judgement to achieve fair, sustainable and customer-focused outcomes
- Execute the Suncorp NZ Disaster Response and Event Claims strategy, supporting delivery of SNZ and NHC SLAs and FIC requirements
- Act as a subject matter expert and escalation point for complex claims matters
- Provide coaching, mentoring and technical guidance to less experienced claims team members
- Work closely with internal stakeholders including underwriting, sales and in-house legal teams
- Engage effectively with external legal providers, brokers, advocates and other industry partners
- Support the Team Manager as required, contributing to leadership, capability uplift and team resilience during event responses
What you’ll bring
- Extensive claims experience, with around 10 years’ experience in claims advocacy or complex claims management
- Proven expertise in managing high-value, disputed or litigated claims, ideally within disaster or event environments
- Strong negotiation and advocacy skills, with confidence operating in mediations, disputes and court settings
- Highly developed problem-solving and analytical capability, with sound judgement in complex situations
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and build credibility across diverse stakeholders
- Demonstrated coaching and mentoring capability, supporting the development of others
- A tertiary qualification in law or a relevant business discipline (desired)
- Resilience, adaptability and composure under pressure, particularly in high-volume or high-impact event situations
- A collaborative, values-driven approach aligned to Suncorp New Zealand’s customer and risk culture
