Building Technical Advisor

Permanent | Perth, WA

Are you an experienced building professional with a passion for quality, compliance and customer outcomes? We’re looking for a Building Technical Advisor to join our Consumer Property Claims team in Perth on a permanent basis.

In this role, you’ll play a critical part in ensuring technical excellence and integrity across residential insurance repairs. You’ll provide expert advice to assessing teams, support complex claims, and ensure repairs meet legislative and industry standards — delivering positive outcomes for both customers and the business.

About the Role

As a Building Technical Advisor, you will provide specialist building and technical expertise across complex insurance claims. Working closely with Assessors, Client Managers, Repairers and industry specialists, you’ll ensure repair scopes are accurate, compliant and cost-effective.

You’ll attend sites, review scopes of work, assess repair quality, and provide expert advice to resolve technically complex issues, disputes and complaints.

This role reports to the Assessing Manager and has no direct reports.

More specifically, you will:

Deliver Brilliant Customer Service

  • Provide clear, accurate and professional technical advice to internal and external stakeholders
  • Support the management of building-related complaints in line with internal processes
  • Deliver outcomes aligned to service excellence principles: be genuine, make it easy, own it and find solutions

Effective Claims & Repair Management

  • Review scopes of work, quotes and specialist reports to balance customer needs, policy conditions and business outcomes
  • Conduct on-site audits and quality assurance reviews of repairs and rectification works
  • Support site inspections to ensure safety, quality and adherence to approved scopes
  • Work with engineers, geotechnical experts and other specialists to establish cause of damage and appropriate rectification
  • Provide technical advice in complex disputes and claims escalations
  • Support cost control initiatives, including rectification confirmation and input into builder rate cards
  • Assist with project management of complex repairs and rebuilds
  • Deliver technical training to repairers and builders when required

Risk Management, Compliance & Governance

  • Ensure compliance with the National Construction Code, BCA and Australian Standards
  • Work with local authorities and third-party building surveyors on compliance matters
  • Identify and mitigate potential risks to prevent unnecessary claim escalation
  • Identify and report suspected fraudulent activity
  • Comply with all legislative, regulatory and internal requirements including the General Insurance Code of Practice, Privacy and IDR processes

Contribution & Continuous Improvement

  • Support major events and catastrophe response when required
  • Provide insights, trends and feedback on building repair outcomes
  • Identify opportunities for process and customer experience improvement
  • Actively commit to personal development and role-model expected behaviours and wellbeing standards

About You:

Mandatory Requirements

  • Relevant trade qualification in a repair-related discipline
  • Current or expired builder’s licence
  • Minimum 10+ years’ experience in residential building, renovation and estimating
  • Demonstrated experience estimating, scheduling and supervising building repairs
  • Strong working knowledge of residential building codes and compliance requirements

Highly Desirable

  • Extensive knowledge of the property repair industry and current repair practices
  • Sound knowledge of general insurance products, principles and underwriting

Key Skills & Capabilities

  • Exceptional customer service and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Strong ability to interpret and communicate complex technical information
  • Advanced problem-solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation
  • Proactive, resilient and solutions-focused mindset
  • Strong computer literacy and ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and professional development

What we can offer you:

  • Discounts and offers on a range of insurance products
  • A range of flexible working and leave options, including 20 weeks paid parental leave, 4 weeks secondary carer parental leave, and unlimited paid emergency response leave.
