Manager, Home Claims Risk Partner

About the role:

The purpose of this role is to partner and drive an uplift in Risk Management practices across the assigned business unit. This includes responsibility for operationalising risk frameworks to ensure risk performance goals are achieved and consistency in practice across the Insurance business. 

This role will develop & advocate the desired “voice of risk” in the business to improve risk capability and culture maturity throughout Insurance.

More specifically, you will:

Risk Management

  • Lift the maturity of the assigned business unit in Risk Management Practices by working with the Insurance & Enterprise Risk Leadership teams to deliver the Insurance program of work and assigned business unit specific deliverables.
  • Develop a strong knowledge of the assigned business unit to ensure solid understanding of what current and emerging business issues are being faced with to support considered decision making with the “voice of risk”.
  • Provide advice and voice of risk to the business supporting all aspects of Risk Management, support and coach EGM’s and Business Leader Teams on risk practices.
  • Drive Control maturity uplift by working hand in hand with business to understand control gaps, close the gaps and deliver strong articulation of control descriptions, ready for control testing.
  • Build and manage trusted relationships with the business, advocating the desired risk culture and improving risk capability and maturity throughout the business.
  • Provide the business with Risk performance and insights to support the development of a “safe business”.
  • Ensure that business practices are aligned to ERMF and RAS expectations and that the balance between business specific needs and Insurance level consistency is met.
  • Provide thought leadership to support Strategic and Business Leaders in line with the strategic plans and external regulator environment.
  • Design proactive solutions to achieve strong risk maturity and business outcomes while ensuring the business is safe.
  • Continuously reinforce the journey and focus areas to keep senior management engaged.
  • Embed a customer focussed, high performance culture across the Risk team, supporting talent development and succession planning.

People Leadership

  • Support the EM Consumer Insurance Risk Partner to lead and develop the capability of the Home Risk Team, including supporting engagement activities.
  • Recruit, train, develop and manage high performing team members.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring and professional development opportunities for direct reports in line with career development plans.
  • Proactively address performance issues with employees.
  • Create a team environment which is seen as an attractive career destination for internal and external candidates.
  • Demonstrate commitment to one team, with focus on relentless execution, simplification, and differentiation.

About You:

  • Membership of a related professional body (e.g. Australian Institute of Management, Institute of Internal Auditors,) - Desired
  • University degree in a related field (e.g. Business, Management, Finance, Law) – Desired
  • ISO 31000: Risk Management training – Desired
  • Post-graduate qualifications well regarded.
  • Track record of successful implementation of financial governance /compliance.
  • Track record of successful project risk implementation.
  • Minimum five (5) years appropriate industry experience in general insurance.
  • Minimum five (5) years appropriate industry experience in leadership.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience within Risk related business area(s).
  • Experience in building successful customer relationships at all levels 5+ years

Key Capabilities/Technical Competencies:

Risk and Compliance 

  • Experience in managing risk teams to proactively identify key risks and work with key stakeholders who will manage and mitigate risk.
  • Extensive knowledge of Risk Management methodologies and practices and their application in a 1LOD environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Risk Management methodologies and practices.

Relationship / Stakeholder Management 

  • Experience working with stakeholders at various levels of an organisation.
  • Flexible and collaborative work style.
  • Expert relationship and account management skills; ability to communicate well with diverse stakeholder groups.

  • Structured presentation, consulting, influencing and communication skills.
  • Leadership and Management – A leader who drives a high performing team with cohesive team culture via a joint exploration of strategy and fostering an environment where people assist each other to achieve objectives.

  • Proven ability to work with many stakeholders to get the right outcomes for Insurance and the Group.

  • Ensure the interests of Insurance and the Group are taken into consideration and that collaborative endeavours are investigated where appropriate.
  • Prioritise workload in order to ensure all objectives are achieved and business stakeholders are managed appropriately.

  • Ability to contribute to and understand complex and strategic perspectives and translate to tactical actions.
  • Strong ability to approach business issues from a strategic perspective, and understand the motivations of other parties, to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ability to combine a strong technical understanding and its application to the challenges on the business, at a micro and macro perspective.
