About the opportunity
We are seeking a Principal Engineer to serve as a senior-most individual contributor across our bank’s technology organisation. In this pivotal role, you will operate as a hands-on technical leader, advisor, and influencer, collaborating across engineering, digital product, and business teams to shape and drive the most complex, mission-critical technology initiatives.
This role does not manage people but leads through deep technical authority, exceptional problem solving, cross-functional influence, and a relentless drive for engineering excellence. You will set the technical direction for major programs, advise product and platform engineering teams, and act as a critical bridge between architecture, delivery, security, and innovation.
You will get the opportunity to work with the newest technologies, mentor others whilst also having access to learning and development platforms plus the opportunity to get certified in cloud technologies.
Our community is a place to thrive in if you enjoy working in a changing environment and thinking of creative solutions.
In this role you’ll get to…
- Lead complex technical initiatives across product, platform, and core banking systems — from modernisation of legacy architecture to complex identity and microservice architectures.
- Set the bar for technical excellence in engineering craft, code quality, performance, scalability, and security.
- Serve as a trusted technical advisor to senior engineering leaders, product owners, and the CISO & CTO — influencing technology direction and architecture.
- Partner with UP/digital, risk, security, and business units to align engineering strategies with business goals, regulatory needs, and customer outcomes.
- Diagnose and resolve systemic technology issues, including performance bottlenecks, service reliability, developer experience, and CI/CD maturity.
- Champion modern engineering practices (e.g., DevOps, Test Automation, SRE, platform engineering) and mentor senior engineers and principal-level talent.
- Represent engineering in forums that span business-aligned product teams, security and compliance stakeholders, and enterprise architecture bodies.
What you’ll bring to the role
You will be a well-rounded cybersecurity professional with the technical skills and leadership qualities to support the CISO, the Executive leadership team and protect the organisation's assets.
Deep Technical Expertise:
- Broad and deep understanding of software development principles: This includes various programming paradigms, data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns.
- Proficiency in multiple technology stacks: Experience across different programming languages, frameworks, databases, and cloud platforms relevant to the organization's technology landscape.
- Strong understanding of system architecture and design: Ability to design scalable, reliable, and secure systems. This includes microservices, distributed systems, and enterprise architecture patterns.
- Knowledge of DevOps practices and tooling: Experience with continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD), infrastructure as code (IaC), and automation.
- Understanding of security best practices: Knowledge of common vulnerabilities, security protocols, and secure development practices.
Significant Engineering Leadership Experience:
- Proven track record of leading and managing engineering teams: Experience in hiring, mentoring, performance management, and fostering a positive team culture.
- Experience in setting technical direction and strategy: Involvement in defining technical roadmaps and making critical technology decisions.
- Experience in architectural decision-making: Leading the design and evolution of system architectures.
- Experience in troubleshooting and resolving complex technical issues: Demonstrated ability to diagnose and solve critical production problems.
