The Brucejack Technical Services and Engineering team is now recruiting for the position of Glacier Technician with a competitive base salary between $83,000 - 92,000 dependent on experience, skills, and competencies with consideration to internal equity.

The Glacier Technician reports directly to the Glaciologist or designate. Their primary responsibility is to ensure the collection and recording of technical data for the understanding and operation of the glacier road as required by schedule and to support critical glacier program projects.

We are seeking an individual for a Fly In, Fly Out opportunity working on a two weeks in, two weeks out rotation. This is a full-time, temporary 6-month contract, with the potential for further extension. 

Responsibilities

Perform the following duties with safety being the number one priority:

  • Undergo glacier study and crevasse rescue training with the Glaciologist and Mountain Safety personnel.
  • Assist in conducting bi-weekly glacier surveys along the glacier road using GNSS GPS instruments.
  • Conduct measurements at off road stations for glacier movement and melt studies.
  • Maintain all survey stations and add stations as required for surface melt studies.
  • Enter data into spreadsheets, analyze data and share data with the Glaciologist or designate and Access Road Superintendents as requested.
  • Communicate any observed concerns, safety issues or potential safety issues on the glacier to the Glaciologist or designate and Access Road Superintendents.  
  • Assist the Glaciologist or designate in UAV surveying of glaciers, access road and surrounding mountainsides.
  • Assist in hot water drilling boreholes through the ice and measuring borehole depth.
  • Participate in project planning with the Glaciologist.
  • Keep track of and ensure all the equipment is maintained and operational throughout the summer season.
  • Ensure all safety gear is stored properly and is in functioning order.
  • Coordinate with consultants and contractors and assist as needed in collecting data, conducting studies, and carrying out other activities on the glacier. 
  • Complete other activities that are not necessarily glacier related to support general mine operations, such as surface surveying.
  • If needed, learn GNSS GPS surveying, UAV surveying, photogrammetric 3D modelling, GIS mapping, data analysis, and other skills from Glaciology, Geotechnical, and Survey teams.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a technical diploma related to glaciers or equivalent combination of seasoned technical knowledge and experience
  • Minimum of two (2) year of experience working on the surface of glaciers in a road access scenario.
  • Registered member of EGBC, or equivalent, is an asset but not a requirement

Skills

  • Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Office, GIS etc.)
  • Exceptional planning, organizational, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (English)
  • Ability to liaise effectively with management teams and deal with complex problems
  • Have sufficient physical strength and glacier travel skills to carry 50 lbs. of survey equipment across the glacier and to manipulate the drill and its components while drilling.
  • Understand the safety hazards inherent with working on the glacier and the methods to mitigate the hazards.
  • Knowledge of glacier dynamics.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of GPS equipment.
  • Familiarity with UAV operations, UAV pilot certificate is a bonus

  • Work at remote location (camp) on a 13 days on/13 days off/2 travel days schedule
  • Able to pass a pre-employment medical screening
  • Must be able to lift/move up to 50 lbs. throughout a work shift
  • Be able maintain high levels of performance over 12-hour shifts
  • Able to work in areas of extreme weather conditions
  • Able to work in close quarters with the team
