The Royal Hobart Hospital is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Staff Specialist Radiology vacancy.

Please note: Only current Department of Health, including Tasmanian Health Service employees, are eligible to apply.

The Role

Within the discipline of Radiology:

  • Provide Specialist in-patient and out-patient care to patients of the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).
  • Be involved with undergraduate teaching and post graduate teaching.
  • Undertake research and quality improvement activities.
  • Conduct radiological examinations and report findings.
  • Provide advice on radiological findings and investigations required to other consultants and medical staff.

Duties:

1. Patient Care

  • Provide a radiology service to in-patients and out-patients.
  • Participate in the after-hours on-call roster.

2. Teaching

  • Undertake undergraduate clinical teaching.
  • Provide supervision and training of post-graduate specialist trainees.

3. Research

  • Maintain involvement in research activities.

4. Administration

  • Work closely with the Director and other Staff.

5. Actively participate in and contribute to the organisation’s Quality & Safety and Work Health & Safety processes, including in the development and implementation of safety systems, improvement initiatives, safeguarding practices for vulnerable people, and related training.

6. The incumbent can expect to be allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, that are within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying positions at this classification level.

Salary

Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $216,300 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $296,640 with further salary increments available.

  • Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 - $310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available: 

  • A market allowance between $54,000 and $95,000* pro rata per annum, depending on level of experience (*expires 30 June 2026 subject to review).
  • Allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $28,786 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,974 pro rata per annum.
  • On call allowance % of Base Salary.
  • All other allowances as per current Award.
  • And subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on-call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

Details of Appointment

Fixed term full-time day work (with on-call), working 76 hours per fortnight commencing as soon as possible until 23 October 2026.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time and casual vacancies.

Essential Requirements

  • Holds specialist registration; or
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway; or
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.

*Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer.  The following checks are to be conducted:

  1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
    1. Crimes of violence
    2. Sex related offences
    3. Serious drug offences
    4. Crimes involving dishonesty
  2. Identification check
  3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check

It is the Employee’s responsibility to notify an Employer of any new criminal convictions during the course of their employment with the Department.

Desirable Requirements

  • Competency in the main modalities of CT, MRI, Ultrasound and plain x-ray
  • Competency in Tier A Interventional procedures such as basic diagnostic angiography and interventional techniques
