Why Thiess?

Thiess is built on a proud history of delivering excellence in mining for over 90 years. With a team of 15,000+ across multiple continents, we blend world-class talent and cutting-edge technology to shape a sustainable mining future.

What you’ll do:

As a Payroll Officer, you'll be responsible for end-to-end processing of monthly payrolls, ensuring compliance with relevant Awards, Enterprise Agreements, and legislation. You'll act as a subject matter expert within the team, resolving complex payroll queries, coaching and mentoring peers, and identifying opportunities to streamline payroll processes.

You'll liaise closely with HR, Finance, Reward, and external payroll providers to ensure data accuracy and process efficiency. This is a hands-on role ideal for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and is passionate about delivering great service while driving improvement.

  • Process accurate and timely monthly payrolls, including off-cycle payments when needed.
  • Manage payroll-related queries and troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Ensure payroll compliance by interpreting salaried contracts, Awards, and EAs.
  • Maintain payroll records and review pay journals and reports.
  • Support payroll training, onboarding, and process documentation.
  • Act as a super user for payroll systems such as Oracle HRIS and Preceda.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and transformation projects.

A bit about you:

To be successful in this role, you’ll bring 2–5 years of hands-on experience in payroll processing, ideally gained within a large and complex organisation. You have a solid understanding of Australian payroll legislation, Awards, and Enterprise Agreements, and you’re confident interpreting and applying these to ensure compliance. Experience using payroll systems such as Oracle and/or Preceda is highly regarded, and you’re comfortable working with large volumes of data while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

You’re a strong communicator with excellent stakeholder engagement skills, able to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines with ease. Your proactive, solutions-focused approach means you can work independently while also contributing positively within a team. With strong time management and a calm, professional demeanour, you thrive in fast-paced environments. Qualifications in HR or a related field would be an advantage and reflect your commitment to professional growth.

What we offer:

  • Flexible, hybrid work model
  • Supportive, inclusive culture that values innovation and continuous improvement
  • Career development and technical training opportunities.
  • Collaborative, values-led culture with a global reach.
  • Access to leading-edge technology and systems.
  • Competitive salary and employee benefits package
