About the role 

We are seeking an experienced Senior Geologist to join the Thiess Technical team at Pembroke Resource’s Olive Downs Complex. 

Pembroke Resources’ Olive Downs Complex, located 40 kilometres southeast of Moranbah, commenced mining operations in mid2023. Thiess was awarded a five year contract to deliver full-service mining operations, including mine planning, overburden removal, drill and blast, autonomous load and haul, water management and rehabilitation, as well as construction of the supporting mine infrastructure. 

The Senior Geologist role is primarily centred on geological modelling, with initial site-based work on a 5/2/4/3 roster required to gain a thorough understanding of the operation, followed by a transition to a hybrid city/site working arrangement. 

Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, you will be required to: 

  • Generate and maintain the structural and Run-Of-Mine models 
  • Perform block-by-block and periodic coal recovery and dilution reconciliations
  • Assist with procedural and documentation of mining practices 
  • Update and maintain the project Coal Quality Management Plan (CQMP) 
  • Promote and monitor compliance with the CQMP and communicate compliance to project leadership as required 
  • Update and maintain the site geotechnical database and model 
  • Oversee the management of geotechnical hazards on site 

About You 

You are a high-achieving and focused Senior Geologist with extensive experience in a similar role. You are committed to driving a high-performing and inclusive team. 

  • Tertiary qualifications in Geology
  • Minimum 5 years operational experience working at a large-scale open cut coal operation  
  • Coal mine geology & production experience   
  • Mandatory experience in geological modelling through Vulcan:

    * Gamma interpretation 
    * Database management 
    * Fault interpretation/ modelling 
 
 
 
  • Understanding of mining principles, design concepts and operations  
  • Proficient in Vulcan or relevant mine planning and design software would be advantageous 
  • Proficient in MS Office suite 
  • Geotechnical engineering experience is also advantageous  
  • Strong planning and problem-solving skills 
  • A high level of strategic thinking 
  • Self-driven individual with strong leadership and talent development skills
