The Opportunity
Thiess is seeking an experienced Senior HR Business Partner to support the Curragh North Project, Blackwater providing both strategic and operational HR leadership in a growing project environment.
Working a 5/2 roster based on site, you will act as the primary HR advisor to operational and functional leaders, driving people outcomes that align with Thiess’ operational goals and our broader people strategy. Supporting a workforce of approximately 500 employees, this role will be pivotal in shaping workforce planning, cultural alignment, and capability uplift across the leadership, technical services, production & maintenance departments.
This is a hands-on, dynamic position ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced environments and enjoys the breadth of true generalist HR work—from ER/IR to leadership coaching, performance, engagement, and governance.
About the Role
In this role, you will:
- Deliver Thiess’ people strategy and support workforce planning
- Lead investigations, ER/IR matters, grievances and Award/EA interpretation
- Oversee onboarding, HR processes, HRIS data and compliance
- Support pay/classification queries
- Coach leaders on performance, conduct and people leadership
- Support engagement, culture, inclusion and wellbeing initiatives
- Promote safety‑first behaviours and assist with relevant investigations
- Identify HR process improvements and support new system rollouts
- Provide workforce insights for planning, forecasting and budgeting
- Visible support and coaching provided to frontline leaders.
About You
We are ideally seeking an experienced HR professional with a strong generalist background in operational or heavy industry environments, particularly within mining. This role requires hands-on ER/IR expertise, confidence working in complex, high-volume settings, and the ability to partner effectively with leaders to deliver fair, compliant, and practical workforce outcomes.
Key requirements
- Tertiary qualifications in Human Resources, Business, or a related discipline (or currently working toward).
- Proven generalist HR experience in a site-based, operational, mining, or heavy industry environment.
- Strong hands-on capability in ER/IR case management, investigations, and procedural fairness.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret Awards and Enterprise Agreements and support large operational workforces.
- Confident, clear, and influential communication skills with leaders at all levels, supported by strong judgement and documentation skills.
- Proficiency in HR systems (HRIS) and Microsoft Office, with a collaborative, values-based approach to developing leaders and improving workforce outcomes.
